Here’s all the Victorian public holidays to put in your diary for 2023

And some handy tips on how to maximise your annual leave in 2023.

Oh how we love a public holiday!! Whether it’s Easter, Christmas or that random day off in September for the AFL, there are a bunch of public holidays to be aware of in 2023.

Diaries at the ready, here are all the public holiday dates happening this year:

Victorian Public Holiday Dates in 2023

New Year’s Day – Sunday 1 January and Monday 2 January (As New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, the Monday is an additional public holiday.)

Australia Day – Thursday 26 January

Labour Day – Monday 13 March

Good Friday – Friday 7 April

Saturday before Easter Sunday – Saturday 8 April

Easter Sunday – Sunday 9 April

Easter Monday – Monday 10 April

ANZAC Day – Tuesday 25 April

King’s Birthday – Monday 12 June

Friday before the AFL Grand Final – Friday 29 September  (subject to AFL schedule)

Melbourne Cup – Tuesday 7 November

Christmas Day – Monday 25 December

Boxing Day – Tuesday 26 December

How to maximise your annual leave in 2023

Australia Day 2023 

In 2023, the Australia Day public holiday falls on a Thursday. If you take annual leave from 23-25 January and then 27 January on the Friday (four days), you’ll end up with a nine-day break.

Easter 2023

In 2023, Good Friday falls on 7 April, with Easter Monday following on 10 April. If you take four days annual leave from 3-6 April, you’ll enjoy a 10-day break from Saturday, 1 April through to Monday, 10 April.

Anzac Day 2023

ANZAC Day takes place on 25 April, which in 2023 will fall on a Tuesday. If you book annual leave on 24 April as well as from 26-28 April (four days), you’ll get a nine-day break from 22-30 April.

Labour Day 2023 

Labour Day falls on different dates in individual states and territories. Check official announcements for all public holidays in your location. By taking four days of annual leave the week Labour Day falls in your state or territory, you’ll get a nine-day break.

Kings’ Birthday 2023

In 2023 the King’s Birthday public holiday falls on 12 June in every state and territory except Queensland and Western Australia. It always falls on a Monday. If you book four days annual leave around the public holiday, you’ll get nine days off. Or just use one day of leave on the previous Friday to have a four-day weekend.

Christmas 2023 and New Year’s 2024

Christmas Day falls on a Monday in 2023 with the Boxing Day public holiday following on Tuesday, 26 December. The New Year’s Day public holiday falls on Monday, 1 January 2024. Take three days’ annual leave from 27-29 December to get 10 days off from Saturday, 23 December through to Tuesday, 2 January.

Non-metropolitan public holidays in Victoria for 2023

Non-metropolitan public holidays are declared in accordance with the Public Holidays Act 1993 and details are published throughout the year when supplied by local municipalities.

Wednesday 1 November Greater Bendigo City Council – Full day holiday for all areas west of the Campaspe River.

Wednesday 8 November Macedon Ranges Shire Council – Full day holiday in the postcodes of 3444, 3446, 3458 and the localities of Cadello and Carlsruhe.

Friday 24 November Wodonga Council – Full day public holiday for the municipal district of Wodonga City.

Extra Things To Note

ANZAC Day, Good Friday and Christmas Day are restricted trading days.

Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday across all of Victoria unless alternate local holiday has been arranged by a non-metro council.
