Held Captive

A punk band talking about butterflies? Who knows how deep their lepidopterology runs, and who cares. And who the hell uses lepidopterology in a music street press. Probably a top guy, I reckon. Anyway, Tassie punks Captives have been on the road since the beginning of this month in support of their forthcoming EP Butterflies, Diamonds & Lightning. It’s the band’s second effort, following their cracking 2013 debut which received a ton of great press. The Rock Pit called it a collection of “unadorned rock and roll with a hearty injection of punk noise and attitude”, while SGSN served up comparisons to US rock kings The Bronx when they noted the band’s use of “lacerating, unprocessed riffs”. Not a bad introduction to the music world at all. ‘Insomnia’ is a little taste of their newie, and it looks as though it is following in the vein of its predecessor. “Rocking! I don’t know if I need to say anymore,” say’s triple j’s Dom Alessio about the track. “That sums it up for me. Brash, bassy, thudding, jagged guitars with gnarly Bronx-esque vocals.” While you could do far, far worse than being lumped with The Bronx, make no mistake that this outfit is their own beast. The Eastern, Ballarat – October 3.
