Hein Cooper brings his raw, garage-made album My Own to Torquay for national tour

Hein Cooper
words by Frankie Anderson-Byrne

From his mum’s garage to the coastal stages of Victoria, Australian indie-folk gem Hein Cooper is back – and he’s bringing a whole lot of heart with him.

This week, the acclaimed singer-songwriter kicks off a national co-headline tour with fellow troubadour Gaudion, and lucky for us, Torquay is on the list. If you’re into raw, honest songwriting with that dreamy indie-folk feel (think Bon Iver meets Ben Howard), then you’ll want to grab a spot at this one.

Cooper’s just dropped his fourth studio album, My Own – and it’s as personal as it gets. We’re talking written, recorded, and produced entirely by Cooper himself over six months, all from the humble setup of his mum’s garage. The result? A beautifully vulnerable, emotionally rich collection of songs that cut straight to the core.

“I called the record My Own because it really is me – I wrote it, recorded it, and produced all of my deepest thoughts and feelings,” he says. And you can feel that truth in every track.

Each month, Cooper let life lead the way, releasing one song at a time, shaped by whatever he was going through in the moment. The final product is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and creative freedom – and it hits different when you know it was born out of such an honest process.

Expect an intimate, soul-stirring set when Cooper hits Torquay, packed with the kind of storytelling that makes you feel seen, and the kind of melodies that stay with you long after the last chord.

Whether you’ve been following Cooper since his earlier releases or you’re just discovering his music now, this show is the perfect chance to catch an artist fully in his element – and fully in control of his craft.
