Heads up, a late-night bar featuring a cheese train is opening on Pakington Street in an Australian-first

A ‘sushi train’ dedicated exclusively to cheese is coming (hopefully).

In the only news you need to hear this week, a new late-night ‘cheese worshipping’ restaurant and bar is planning to open on Pakington Street, and it’s going to become home to Australia’s very first ‘cheese train’.

The key takeaways

  • A Geelong business intends to open a late night bar and restaurant dedicated to cheese
  • The venue will boast a cheese train, the first in Australia
  • If approved, the venue will operate daily, staying open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays

In what can only be described as a cheese lovers heaven, the fromagerie worshipping venue is a venture spawned by Geelong local business Splatters and will see the purveyors of cheese open a fully-licensed restaurant on Pakington Street, boasting a conveyor belt of cheeses. Yes, a cheese train. A damn cheese train. Is this not the greatest thing to ever happen?!

Under planning applications lodged with the City of Greater Geelong, the local business intends to transform the former pharmacy on Pakington Street into an immaculately styled venue that will help locals indulge in the world of Brie, blue, and burrata in a thriving and central location.

Coined the ‘Splatters Cheese Bar’, the venue will consist of three dine-in areas – the cheese train, restaurant and cheese garden, according to the documents. It will open from Sunday to Thursdays from 11am to 11pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays it intends to operate from 11am to 1am the following day.

We imagine the cheese train aspect will see punters taking a seat bar side for them to gaze longingly into the perpetually rotating belt of cheesy goodness. Like a sushi train, we’re thinking cheese lovers will be able to take their pick from a tonne of cheese varieties.

Under the plans, the venue will also offer a pick-up option for their thriving online gourmet cheese platter business as well as a base for their catering services.

A Forte favourite for a while now, Splatters made a name for themselves around the region as a ‘rolling eatery version of a cheese-lovers mecca’, creating fresh, indulgent and delicious cheese platters for events directly from their food truck. Splatters was created by Jo Bangles, a seasoned festival-goer who was sick of facing a choice between lugging her own food to festivals and events, and settling for traditional food like burgers and deep-fried food. Her own Splatters food truck was the solution.

Unfortunately, like many others, Splatters food truck endeavours came to a screeching halt last year when the world was told to change the way we interact as human beings in society under the strict Government social-distancing requirements. With events cancelled, Splatters swiftly adapted, transforming into Geelong’s favourite online grazing stores.

Since then, they’ve been providing their Splatters cheese platters (a splatterbox!) to the entirety of the Geelong region. Focusing on fresh, housemade, local, imported and seasonal ingredients, these splatterboxes feature an array of divine Australian cheeses accompanied by cured meats (think salami, kabana, prosciutto), season fruit and nuts, dip, a mixture of crackers, olives, dried fruits, vegetable crudites, and other yummies like chocolate dipped pretzels.

Splatters (being the considerate folk they are) also offer gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options, as well as kids boxes, fresh fruit boxes, and even brunch boxes for two.

While it’s huge news for Geelong’s foodie scene, it’s also a pretty big deal across Australia, with the cheese-train aspect being a nation’s first. It’s reported that the first venue in the world with a ‘sushi train’ dedicated exclusively to cheese opened in London in 2019.

We’re pretty much on board with anything dedicated to the fromagerie, but a cheese train? We’ve literally died and gone to heaven.

Keep up to date with the latest via Splatters socials and in the meantime, you can simply indulge in one of their delish splatterboxes.
