Gyan Locks in Hometown Show

Born and raised in Geelong, Gyan Evans, who travels musically as Gyan, released her debut album in 1989. Three singles were released from the album including ‘Wait’, a track about a lonely girl waiting for her first true love.

The following year she snagged the ARIA for ‘Best New Talent’. In 2014, she began a Kickstarter campaign for what would become her sixth album, 2015’s This Girl’s in Love. Covering another’s work is often fraught with pressure, particularly when the artists being covered include Tom Waits, Neil Young, Kate Bush and John Lennon.

Her first release since 2010’s Superfragilistically, the album also features a re recording of her 1989 hit, Wait. Gyan: “It was a strange kind of education, singing someone else’s material, putting on their masterful jackets. But songs we remembered fondly turned out to be bombastic when we revisited them, so we’ve made the production of This Girl’s in Love come from the place where we live now artistically. There’s a dream like quality to our approach to going back in time.”

Gyan will swing by Beav’s Bar, Geelong on July 21 as part of her album tour.
