Got lockdown cabin fever? Here’s where to get some fresh air

Words by Jessica Magtalas

When lockdown gets overwhelming, take a break and be one with mother nature.

Another day of lockdown and there’s no denying that we’re all craving the freedom of the outdoors. The crisp air, the chilly breeze, the warm sun and the occasional smell of freshly cut grass – we’re feeling the withdrawals of good ole’ vitamin D.

While keeping socially distanced from friends and those around you is the safest during the times of a pandemic, there’s no harm in taking a few minutes out of your day to refresh, clear your headspace and get rid of those indoor itches.

Before leaving make sure to equip yourself with your favourite mask, keep your distance and be safe. Read along as we list six locations in Geelong to keep those cabin fever jitters at bay – you’ll thank us later.

You Yangs
For a nice bushwalk, head to the You Yangs and take a hike along one of its many spectacular trails. With magnificent views and birdlife, you’ll find a diverse range of landscape and scenery. Towering with sparse native trees and eucalypts, you may even spot a koala and other wildlife along your voyage.

As part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape, ensure to respect the deep connection of the Wadawurrung People and feel the culture of the traditional owners of the land.

Have a knack for bike-riding? No problem, take your mountain bike along and explore more than fifty kilometres of trails, perfect for beginners and experts. You can even reach the highest point and prepared to be amazed by the views of Melbourne and Geelong.

Find out more info here. If you’re with the kids, we recommend also checking out this You Yangs Big Rock walk.

Eastern Beach to Rippleside
A six kilometre out and back trail located in Geelong. This trail offers scenic views great to get a quick little outdoor comfort. Go for a quick run or take it easy with a walk, it’s perfect for anyone.

Popular throughout the day and all-year round, the early mornings offer something more beautiful, especially on sunnier days. The path starts at Eastern Beach Bathing Complex, goes over the boardwalk and continues along the Eastern Beach towards the West and Rippleside Park.

A usual walk spans to forty-five minutes, though you’ll be wanting to take a few more minutes to truly take in the atmosphere.

Geelong Botanic Gardens Walk, Eastern Park
A garden full of greenery, flora and an ocean of grass, this easy walk starts at Geelong’s magnificent Botanic Gardens, but also goes to capture the Eastern Park’s beautiful trees, open play areas and flying foxes.

A smooth track great for jogging and a casual stroll, you’ll feel serene while taking in the scenic views. Take a quick break to catch your breath under the shade of a tree or set yourself down onto the pillowy grass.

Barwon River Walk
Located in Geelong, this walk starts and end at the Balyang Sanctuary, where the circuit gently winds along the Barwon river. Soak up the sun and take in the reserve’s flora and fauna. Along the wetlands be sure to keep your eyes peeled to the ducks, pelicans and even swans – quite exciting if you ask me.

Feel free to walk under the bridge, where a separate walkway is present for pedestrians or stay along the riverside to feel accompanied by the vegetation residing there.

You can find the location here.

Bellarine Rail Trail
Take your bike out of the shed and ride the full thirty-two-kilometre rail trail of South Geelong. With scenery ranging from suburban to farmland and changing landscapes of the peninsula, you’ll feel the best of both worlds.

No need to take the full distance, simply choose a section to walk or ride through that’s most convenient for you.

Norman Lane Heritage Walk
If you’re not too keen on bugs or the idea of nature, that’s okay! For those in the northern suburbs, you can visit the Norman Lane Heritage Walk. Starting and finishing at Labuan Square, take the journey around the Norman lane Precinct and discover some historic background of the neighbourhood.

Developed as part of a project to connect people to their neighbourhood, feel part of the community and take a stroll around the block.
