Good news, the Belmont Market returns this weekend

The historic Belmont Market has always been a large part of the bustling Greater Geelong region.

With indoor and outdoor stalls, the market has become a community hub on Sunday’s for the past 50 years as people come together and trade – rain, hail or shine… or they did until the Council-managed market was closed for health and safety reasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March.

Boasting a wide variety of products on offer every week, including popular items such as; new, pre-loved and vintage clothing, jewellery and other accessories, fresh fruit and vegetables, plants and flowers, hot food and confectionery, home wares and toys, crafts and materials, vintage and industrial items, and much, much more, the cancellation of the market was devastating to the local community.

Now with the easing of coronavirus restrictions, life will be injected back into the region when the market returns on Sunday June 21, placing the event delivery team on a growing list of City employees returning to their substantive roles, following the gradual lifting of forced shutdowns.

Current permanent stallholders have been told about the return date, while casual stallholders are being told to use the online booking system to secure their site (these bookings are essential).

Unfortunately, this means there will be no ‘on the day’ casual stallholders, and the overall number of stalls available for hire will be reduced in an effort to accommodate the strict social distancing requirements. Physical distancing measures will also be in place, including one person per every four-square metres of indoor space.

“The Belmont Market is one of those important community events that contributes so much to our rich and diverse social life. It is great to be able to welcome back our market sellers, who have been among those strongly impacted by the state’s COVID-19 restrictions,” explains Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher.

The City of Greater Geelong has developed COVID-19 safe work plans to ensure the health and safety of patrons, stallholders and employees, but they do urge people to stay home in they are feeling unwell.

The Belmont Market is located at 1 Barwon Heads road, Belmont Victoria and runs from 8am-1pm. For more information, visit City of Greater Geelong.
