Gold Coast quintet Pure Milk delivered a tasty indie rock gem last month with ‘Pressure’, tackling everyday anxieties and their effects on human behaviour.
Driven by their spirit of DIY, lo-fi garage rock, ‘Pressure’ is championed by laid back vocals, dissonant guitar lines and a sharp, dry wit and is three minutes and 26 seconds of pure indie rock wholesomeness, with a touch of punk sentiment and alt-country twang. Bright and lively from the first notes, the track highlights the band’s depth of maturity in a lyrical sense, been an ode to day to day anxieties and their behavioural impacts.
“‘Pressure’ is about grappling with all the strain and stress you can put on yourself in your day to day, and how you can start taking it out on everyone around you, even when they don’t deserve it. It’s that bubbling feeling of anxiety, trying to hold it in, trying to get through the day grinning with clenched teeth,” explains frontman Lewis Nitschinsk.
“I was definitely inspired by a lot of indie/alt-country bands like Purple Mountains, Courtney Barnett, and Dick Diver which kind of lead to the more country vibes on the song. We wanted it to be really fun and pretty in the verses, and then break out in dissonant, odd guitar lines in the chorus.”
Check it out below.
To celebrate the track, we got the guys to craft us a wholesome gardening playlist, perfect for when you just need to get out of the house and into the garden:
Avant Gardener – Courtney Barnett
This one is a no brainer really, it is THE gardening song.
Alice – Dick Diver
This is a song for some early morning gardening, you know when the sun is just coming over the trees in front of your house and you’re checking nothings eaten your tomatoes, that sort of vibe.
Cattails – Big Thief
This again is a song for that early morning labour, I feel like you could do some digging to this track? Either way it’s phenomenal and probably my favourite tune of 2019, don’t sleep on Big Thief!
Julie’s Place – Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
I’m like 90% sure the video clip for this is the band mowing the lawn and for that it get’s a place in the gardening playlist. Recommended for mowing lawns and trimming hedges.
Preloved – Peach Fur
Peach Fur are our Gold Coast pals and purveyors of blissful psych-pop, I recommend playing this one during your spring harvest, or maybe when you’re digging out an old crop to plant something new, a peach tree maybe?
Waiting Out – Dumb Things
In my personal opinion Dumb Things are one of the most underrated bands in Brisbane right now, they have something special I can’t recommend enough. I’d recommend pairing this song with some mid-morning weeding.
Pressure – Pure Milk
We’re with you for that peak midday sun, you’re probably working a up a pretty big sweat now, desperately trying to remember what tip Costa had about bromeliads last week on Gardening Australia. It’s okay though, bromeliads are versatile they survive through anything.
In The Garden – Two People
This one’s Dylan’s pick, it’s for when the heat is getting a little too much, maybe you should take a break, have a bit of water? Clear your head for 20 minutes.
Sunshower – Flowertruck
Sunshower? Mid-Arvo Storm? Maybe a cold front is coming through to ruin your weekend gardening plans? Either way Flowertruck will be there to take you through it all.
Green Aisles – Real Estate
When I was a kid I lived on Mount Tamborine, and for those uninitiated it’s this beautiful mountain in the Gold Coast hinterland. Anyway when you drive along the side streets most houses have a little front yard produce stores selling things like avocados, pumpkins and rhubarb, it’s the ones that have a an old milo tin with a hole cut in the top to deposit the money. This song always reminds me of those streets so of course it gets a mention.
Vacation – Florist
I think these guys are a Brooklyn band and they’re seriously fantastic. This one is best paired your afternoon tea break, maybe with a side of introspection.
Bonny Doon – Long Wave
This one is for the end of the day, sore arms, dirty jeans, a setting sun, maybe a beer with friends. The gardens looking good, you just spent the arvo mulching and now you’re praying that ABC is right and you’re going to get 20ml’s overnight, if not you might have to give it a hosing yourself. You don’t really mind though, that can be a task for next weekend.
