The celebrations continue from 2nd to 3rd September with the much-anticipated Goddess Weekend. This extraordinary two-day free event will be led by local business owners, creatives, screen industry pioneers, and innovators, showcasing a diverse range of activities suitable for all ages. The Goddess Weekend, running daily from 10 am to 5 pm, promises to be a captivating experience spanning dance, fashion, film, music, comedy, and art.

Attendees will have the chance to participate in a contemporary cultural dance workshop with Queen Acknowledgements, learn the art of flawless makeup with drag disrupter Ruby Slippers, create stunning ochre paintings and bush bouquets with Yarn Strong Sistas, and get groovy at an 80s dance workshop by Real Hot Bitches. Additionally, Collective Closets will share their expertise on slow fashion with a talk and scarf-tying tutorial.

Film enthusiasts will be in for a treat as they watch the moving documentary Her Sound, Her Story, which delves into the experiences of women in the Australian music industry. Director Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore will be present to discuss her craft. ACMI and Melbourne Women in Film Festival will present two expert panels, “Breaking Up the Boys Club: Women in Broadcast Television” and “Doing It Our Way in the Screen Industry,” providing valuable insights into the world of screen entertainment.

The Goddess Weekend will also feature live music performances by local artists Amaya Laucirica and Natasha Johanna, as well as a fun costume design craft workshop for kids. For those seeking a more exclusive experience, there are two paid ticketed events: an 18+ improv comedy show by Sissy Screens and a never-before-seen treat – a screening of Hollywood Home Movies from the Academy Film Archive. This special event will showcase home movies of Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge, and Dorothy Arzner, accompanied by live music from Sally Seltmann.

Dr. Britt Romstad, ACMI’s Executive Director of Experience & Engagement, expressed excitement about the event: “Goddess honors the female film and TV icons who challenged narratives, defied expectations, and transcended tropes. The Goddess Weekend expands that notion beyond the screen, spotlighting homegrown talent from all walks of life. We hope visitors leave feeling empowered, connected, and inspired.”

Goddess: Power, Glamour, Rebellion celebrates the iconic women and gender revolutionists of the screen, from the glamour of Anna May Wong to the power of Pam Grier. The exhibition, featuring never-before-seen costumes, original sketches, interactive experiences, and cinematic treasures, will close on October 1st. Catch this captivating celebration of women in film before it tours internationally from 2024.

In addition to The Goddess Weekend, ACMI has curated an impressive schedule of film screenings, live music, and accessible tours during the final weeks of the exhibition. From Goddess Sundays to Goddess Nights, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
