Say hello to Tacos y Liquor, Geelong’s newest taco joint

Let’s go loco.

Over the last few years, the Little Malop precinct has gained notoriety in Geelong for becoming something of a mini Melbourne with its sneaky laneway restaurants, trendy cafes, stylish bars and all kinds of odd little miscellaneous stores sprinkled in between.

Despite feeling the effects of the decline in foot traffic and the inability to operate as a destination the last few months, that Little Malop Street buzz is certainly starting to come back slowly, especially with the addition of a brand-new foodie destination to visit.

Thanks to renowned Igni and Hot Chicken Project chef-restaurateur Aaron Turner, we’ve now been blessed with Tacos y Liquor, a taco bar with the aim of reflecting Mexico’s street stalls and taco trucks.

Tucked within the blossoming precinct taking over what was previously Cabinet Bar, the 36-seat venue (seating 18 inside and out) is the hip and eclectic Mexican oasis our mini metropolis needs.

Opening during Victoria’s first lockdown, the venue was originally open Thursday to Saturday night for takeaway from 4pm, quickly becoming a favourite for locals in pursuit of authentic Mexican cuisine with their mouth-watering tacos and burritos to-go.

Now the venue has officially opened for dine-in from Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm to 9pm, slinging four different types of tacos and burritos. Choose from pork, Wagyu and chicken, add on a side of Mex pickles or rice and beans, and team it all with some corn chips, Guacamole and salsa, and you’ve got yourself a hectic feast.

“Tacos y Liquor is my homage to the tacos truck of LA and the neighbourhood taco shops of Mexico,” Aaron says. It’s really tiny. We have just four tacos and some sides plus a small tostada menu.

“We’re just trying to keep it in that street vein and not what’s been popularised in Australia which is ritzy and fancy. It’s basically a little bar with a little kitchenette. It’s got that same ethos as the chicken shop and is here to use how you want. I want to make people happy whether that’s a margarita at the bar or four tacos.”

Because we know Mexican and booze are the ultimate combo any day of the week, the bar will feature mezcals, tequilas, a couple of margaritas, a few rotating beers and wine on tap.
