Gelato lovers prepare your spoons, Augustus Gelatery opens in Waurn Ponds

There are 36 flavours on offer, made fresh each day.

Summer is slowly making its comeback for 2021 and the region has just scored another new ice creamery to ensure we can all get a cone of something soft, cold and delicious when the temperature rises.

Opening over the weekend, August 14, Melbourne’s ever-expanding artisan gelateria Augustus Gelatery has landed in Waurn Ponds.

The key takeaways

  • Melbourne artisan ice creamery Augustus Gelatery opens second store in Geelong
  • The store is located on Colac Road in Waurn Ponds
  • There are 36 flavours on offer, made fresh each day

Keep up with the latest food and booze news via our website.

Taking over a storefront on Colac Road (previously Tasty Rooster and next to Subway), the Melbourne business is bringing its artisan delight to more of Geelong since opening their Gheringhap Street store back in 2019.

Handmade fresh in Essendon each day, there is a massive selection in-store with 36 different kinds of the Italian treat, including all your favourites and some unique ones that you’ve just gotta try. Cotton Candy, fig and almond, espresso, bacio, tiramisu, strawberry cheesecake, and choc hazelnut fudge just to name a few. We can promise you’ll transport yourself to Italy with just one lick no matter what you decide.

In sorbet territory, you’ve got all the usual suspects – mango, strawberry, lemon, watermelon, and raspberry, along with dark chocolate, green apple and passionfruit options!

There are also delectable vegan options which include peanut butter and jelly, coconut and mango, pistachio, and salted caramel, and for those not wanting a coned icy treat, there are also amazing handmade cakes (we spy Lemoncello Delight) and ‘crazy shakes’ made from ingredients from the indulgent gelato itself. Clearly, they’re catering for all sweet tooths across the board – and we’re not mad about it.

“Each batch of our 36 gelato flavours is made fresh every single morning from the highest quality ingredients, using traditional Italian machinery and techniques. This ensures that our gelato maintains its incredible melt-in-your-mouth quality that we’re so famous for,” the business shared.

“We are constantly playing around with different taste combinations to produce one of a kind flavours that we know our customers will love. Our range of flavours is completely unique because we’re passionate about providing our customers with gelato flavours they won’t find anywhere else.”

Not only is the product bloody delicious, but the shop itself is super cool, boasting neons and a vibrant atmosphere with a lively purple, lime, and black colour palette, and a 365-days-a year opening policy, making it the perfect place for a get together with friends, family, partners, colleagues – you name it.

It’s clear that it’s not just the gelato that drives this business, but it’s about the colours, the textures and the nostalgia that comes with it. As the brains behind the gelateria Joe Milinaro explained, “it’s about the kids; making them happy and giving them a bit of an experience”. As self-confessed kids at heart, we’re pretty stoked with this addition to the regional ice cream scene.

Open most of the day and into the night, it’s perfect for those early-morning sugar hits, as well as the late-night cravings and post-dinner dates, especially as the nights are finally starting to warm up – just look for the neon green sign on the street.

But say you don’t want to leave the comfort of your perfectly air-conditioned house? Well, fear not, the icy legends do take home tubs and will be on Uber Eats very soon, meaning someone else can bring the world of scrumptious wonderment to you!

With a full three months of summer ahead, we encourage everyone blessed with a sweet tooth to search out some of the best ice cream Waurn Ponds has to offer. I know I’ll be heading in to try the dark chocolate sorbet…
