Geelong’s home of free Drag Shows and gluten-free eats, Recess, just dropped an epic new Spring menu

When it comes to late-night destinations in Geelong that double as a great place to eat, Recess might just be the best of the lot.

This multi-level eatery and wine bar (with one killer rooftop courtyard), courtesy of hospitality veteran and owner Andrew Steere, is definitely our go-to when we need a break from a hectic timetable.

The restaurant blends luxe with industrial and features unique architecture, eclectic furnishings and impressive décor (think neon and leather chesterfield sofas). The cocktail bar impresses from the moment you head upstairs. You’re struck by a stunning beer garden lit with fairy lights with sweeping views of the beautiful St Mary’s church. It’s the perfect place to sip on their playfully named cocktails.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news via our website.

A local staple, Recess has also earned a solid reputation for its weekly drag events. Boasting regular and unmissable free drag shows and DJ entertainment full of glitz and glam, Fabulous Friday and Saucy Saturday makes Recess Bar a complete one-stop shop for a fun night out!

While there’s a lot of love about Recess, it’s also Geelong’s only certified Gluten-Free Restaurant, offering you a space to run around, have a snack, play with friends and make new ones – no matter what your dietaries.

Renowned for being utterly delicious, the venue has just dropped its new Spring menu and this is the stuff that culinary dreams are made of.

The talented chefs have created the ultimate fresh spring menu, full of delicious new dishes, plus a few of your all-time favourites making a return.

Due to insanely popular demand, Recess have bought back the Baked Brie with quince paste, cornichons, moscato glazed grapes and crostini for another feature, while their famous Three Cheese Arancini and Buttermilk Fried Chicken haven’t gone anywhere.

But while we all have our favourites, there are also some brand new dishes we will soon love!

Fresh to the menu is a Soy and Miso Glazed Cabbage with yuzu mayo, shichimi togarashi and sesame which will take your tastebuds on a Japanese-inspired journey. Or if you’re after something more hearty the Duck Breast Thai Red Curry with Asian greens and jasmine rice is a must-try. There are also Pan seared prawns on toasted brioche with dill crème fraiche, watercress and salmon roe new to the menu.

There’s also an indulgent new dessert to try, with the Chocolate parfait with blueberries, chocolate ganache, soil and blueberry meringue. Delish!

To accompany your Recess Eats feast, the team have put together an all-new cocktail menu with something for everyone! The Secret Admirer is fruity and bubbly, made with Jamaican rum, calvados, pear, yellow Chartreuse, pineapple, coconut, lime, Prosecco and bitters. Or if you’re after a non-alcoholic treat our Sweet Cheeks mocktail is the perfect blend of sweet and bitter, made with non-alcoholic Amaretto, Ovant Royal, raspberry, vanilla and lemon.

If you’re the type that can’t decide (preach!), their chefs tasting menu offers up a changing selection of the chefs’ favourite dishes, all gluten free (of course) with vego and vegan options too! The chef’s selection at Recess Bar + Eats is $65 per head and provides the best of the best from the ever-extensive menu. You’ll never have to choose between braised beef cheek or slow roasted pork belly again!
