Geelong’s cheese bar Splatters opens, complete with cheese train, cocktails and Garden of Edam

Australia's only cheese train has officially opened.

Nothing can get cheddar than this. Since announcing its plans for opening back in February last year, we (and we assume the lot of you) have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Geelong’s cheese train bar/restaurant.

Spawned by Geelong local business Splatters, one of our favourite online grazing stores, Geelong’s new late-night ‘cheese worshipping’ restaurant and bar opened its doors on Pakington Street on January 12 2022 after almost a year in the works, becoming home to Australia’s very first ‘cheese train’.

The key takeaways

  • Geelong’s new Cheese Train has opened for the Australian-first.
  • The venue is celebrating with all-you-can-eat cheese sessions for the entire month.
  • Cheese-lovers can still head in without a booking to indulge in the dining room or grab a cheese board and sit outside in the beautiful Garden of Edam.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news via our website.

Transforming the former pharmacy on Pakington Street into an immaculately styled venue that will help locals indulge in the world of Brie, blue, and burrata in a thriving and central location, the ‘Splatters Cheese Bar’ has opened with a month-long opening cheesy fest special, So You Think You Can Cheese.

Punters will take a seat bar side for them to gaze longingly into the perpetually rotating belt of cheesy goodness where they’ll have 90 minutes to eat as many plates of cheese, mouth-watering charcuterie and accompaniments as they can. Like a sushi train, cheese lovers will be able to simply take their pick from a tonne of delicious cheese varieties direct from the 20m conveyor belt, offering a premiere grazing experience like no other. There will be more than 75 different combinations to choose from – and yes, there will be vegan cheese on offer!

Sporting a bright yellow sign, exposed brick walls, cheese grater pendant lights (amazing we know), yellow couches and bar stools, a central bar and an epic conveyor belt, the venue is a must-visit. And while all-you-can-eat cheese may not be for everyone, cheese-lovers can still head in without a booking to indulge in the dining room or grab a cheese board and sit outside in the beautiful Garden of Edam. With yellow stools, wine barrels and umbrellas, this spacious and cheesy outdoor oasis is perfect for late-night cheese and wine dates and is open nightly from Wednesday to Sunday until 11pm.

Alongside the cheese and wine, the fromagerie worshipping venue also offers delicious cocktails, beers, spirits and non-alcoholic options, alongside a killer playlist, providing something for everyone.

While it’s huge news for Geelong’s foodie scene, it’s also a pretty big deal across Australia, with the cheese-train aspect being a nation’s first. It’s reported that the first venue in the world with a ‘sushi train’ dedicated exclusively to cheese opened in London in 2019.

We’re pretty much on board with anything dedicated to the fromagerie, but a cheese train? We’ve literally died and gone to heaven.
