Geelong won’t be having New Year’s Eve fireworks this year

It sucks but there will be other things happening to get you celebrating.

We sat patiently as we heard that Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Gold Coast all cancelled their NYE fireworks celebrations, holding our breath awaiting Geelong’s fate.

Unsurprisingly, having thousands of people gathered in the city en masse during the tail-end of a pandemic probably isn’t a great idea, and so Geelong’s NYE fireworks have officially been cancelled.

Held annually, the free entertainment attracts between 20,000 and 50,000 visitors to the Waterfront for the final evening of the year and is a highlight on Greater Geelong’s social calendar. But due to the COVID restrictions, the health and safety of Greater Geelong residents and visitors to the region was the City’s top priority.

“We understand many people will be disappointed by this, but the cancellation of our New Year’s Eve fireworks is sadly unavoidable in order to ensure the safety of our community,” Geelong City’s Acting Director Economy, Investment and Attraction Tim Ellis said.

“There are still many great ways to mark the occasion in smaller groups.

“You can get together with family and friends at one of our hospitality venues or embrace the space with a picnic in a park.”

While we don’t have the fireworks, you can bet the city will be filled with plenty of cheer as we throw our middle fingers up to 2020 and welcome in a new (and hopefully better) year.
