Garth Davis’ ‘Foe’, starring Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal and Aaron Pierre, kicks off in Victoria.

The excitement continues in the Geelong region with a local restaurant currently being transformed into a film set for the shooting of a new movie.

The Fisherman’s Pier restaurant has been dubbed worthy of filming location for the Amazon Original film Foe. Cast and crew flooded the waterfront on Tuesday with filming expected to continue throughout the week.

Foe is an upcoming science fiction thriller film directed and co-written by Garth Davis (Top of the Lake,” the Oscar-nominated “Lion”), based on the novel of the same name by Iain Reid.

Set in the future, the storyline centres on a young married couple, played by Saoirse Ronan, and Paul Mescal (known from Stan series Normal People) who live on an isolated farm. Their lives are abruptly changed when a stranger knocks on their door and reveals Mescal’s character has been selected to travel to an experimental space station orbiting the earth.

Producers include Kerry Kohansky-Roberts on behalf of AC Studios, Davis for I Am That and Emile Sherman and Iain Canning for See-Saw Films. Executive producers include Reid and I Am That’s Samantha Lang. Libby Sharpe will co-produce for I Am That and See-Saw Films.

The production was attracted to the state through the Victorian Screen Incentive and the Regional Location Assistance Fund, and is set to inject almost $32 million into the Victorian economy. It will create 950 jobs for Victorian cast and crew, including four leading head of department roles.

Filming of the movie started last month in Melbourne and Geelong locals were recruited by casting house Geelong Extras to appear as background extras for the feature film.

Foe joins the list of iconic films shot in the Geelong region, including ‘Nitram’ directed by Justin Kurzel, 2015 literary film adaption of The Dressmaker starring Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth, Nicolas Cage’s 2009 blockbuster Knowing and Ghost Rider, and Mad Max, one of the most famous and influential films ever made in Australia, making a global star of Mel Gibson.

Released in 2019, the $40 million Australian-Chinese co-production of The Whistleblower also involved a number of action scenes shot around central Geelong in August and September back in 2019.
