The statement posted to the stores social media channels read,

“It’s been just over 55 years since we opened our first store in 1969, at the top of High St Belmont (Geelong) and boy what a ride it has been!

“Christmas Eve (24th Dec 2024) will be our last day of trading. We are really proud of what Speakys has achieved over the years, which includes many firsts within the industry and the opportunity to sponsor many talented local Geelong kids. We may even hold the title as being one of the longest running Independent Surf Shops in Australia. We have had amazing staff over the years; many who have gone on to have wonderful careers and some who are still associated with the Surf, Skate and Snow Industry.

“We have also had fabulous customers. Many of you are now fourth generation customers and we consider you part of the greater Speakys Family.

“Small independent family businesses are finding it really tough. Please go out and support your local Milk Bar, Café, Surf/Skate shop, Favourite Store. Without your support these Geelong institutions will fade away.”

Speakys became a staple to the surf, skate and snow culture of the region with locations in Geelong CBD, as landmarked by a classic Holden wagon on the story roof, Torquay, Belmont and Newtown over the years. The establishment started in 1969, birthed from a pop up at Bells Beach selling merchandise during the Bells Beach Pro surfing competition.

Expanding from clothing into sporting equipment to lifestyle products, Speaksy supported emerging brands and more established brands in the surf, skating and snow range, keeping up to date with the latest technologies and innovative lifestyle products. Speakys not only existed as the go-to for board sports but also fostered the next generation of riders through their sponsorship program.

In 2019, the flagship store moved from their signature Little Malop Street location after going into liquidation, but continued through the pandemic in their Market Square and Newtown locations.

The final days of the Newtown Speakys store sees major sales on stock as well as new summer stock on offer.

Get down to Pakington Street to celebrate the end of an era for not only one of Geelong’s biggest brands but to one of Australia’s longest running independent surf stores.
