Commencing two years ago as a full-length performance work supported by Geelong Arts Centre’s creative engine grant program for local artists, Memory House underwent significant changes. Originally planned to be a large-scale contemporary dance piece alongside a number of supporting projects like workshops and an artist forum, the pandemic saw the company adapt their performance piece into a short dance theatre film.

Created with Glass Kingdom Films, the eight-minute film is a spiralling journey through time and memory as one woman looks back on her past to re-create her future. It explores the physicality of memory, the body as home and the Jungian archetype of the house as a metaphor for self. The body becomes a site for both sanctuary and confinement in repeating patterns of human behaviour.

Following its successful premiere at Village Cinemas on its home soil in Geelong, the film has now received recognition on the international stage, selected as part of the European Short Film Festival in Berlin, Germany; San Souci Festival of Dance Cinema in Boulder, Colorado, and Semi Finalist in Dumbo Film Festival, in New York.

The Room Inside by Blink Dance Theatre and Hello Friend Media – a 10 min documentary profiling how the work was made – was also selected at San Souci Festival of Dance Cinema, Boulder Colorado.

It’s an incredible achievement for Geelong’s Blink Dance Theatre, a humble independent, project-based company creating both live performance and screen works, often in site-specific spaces.

Since been established in 2013 by a small team of multidisciplinary artists, the company is renowned to value authentic, immersive, participatory, and contemporary movement and theatre practices, and their international accolades speak to this in volumes, with much credit due to founding Artistic Director, Lyndel Quick and Creative Producers Jessica Lesosky and Elise Wilkinson who not only spearhead new performance projects with the community but also offer opportunities and skills-based programs.

Congratulations to the team, so very well deserved.
