Geelong icon Salty the Seal makes a return in an unexpected location

Words by Staff Writer

A familiar face has popped up at Ryrie Street float and wellness spa, Mind Body Salt this week. Reemerging from retirement is Smorgy's legend Salty The Seal.

There was nothing quite like a buffet meal at Geelong’s Cunningham Pier location Smorgy’s. From their delicious fish treats to the self-serve soft serve machine, Smorgy’s was a feast, but let’s be honest, that’s not why Geelongian’s flocked to the pier-end location. It was for the entertainment.

When King Neptune’s boisterous voice boomed over the speakers and the animatronics of his trident started, the food was pushed to the side ready for the hero to arrive; Salty The Seal.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here.

Ten long years after the restaurant closed its door, Salty was all but forgotten to most but local legend Jarrod Mutimer did not give up hope and searched to return Salty home. Found in storage at Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary, Mutimer successfully rescued the sea mammal.

Now for one week only, Salty the Seal has turned up in the most unexpected location of Mind Body Salt as their winter ambassador. For the remainder of the holiday’s friends can visit the centre and reconnect with an old favourite.

Open from 10am – 8pm Thursday and Friday and 10am until 5pm Saturday, you have the chance to get up close to Salty and grab photos and videos with the furry friend before she goes back into hiding.
