It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Geelong!

The iconic Floating Christmas Tree has officially returned to the picturesque Geelong Waterfront, signalling the start of the holiday season with its ninth annual appearance in the bay.

The world-class silver marvel was carefully towed into position late October, promising a dazzling spectacle for the people of Geelong. The grand lighting ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 11, offering an extravagant opening program that sets the stage for the city’s cherished Christmas festivities. This vibrant celebration will feature a star-studded line-up, including a stage show, roving performers, live entertainment, and more.

Keep up with the latest in local news and entertainment here.

Courtesy of the visionary Darryn Lyons, this renowned 25-metre structure made its debut back in 2014 and has since provided a gathering place for locals leading up to Christmas. Its enchanting light show, choreographed to music, has become a beloved tradition, bringing the community together and infusing the air with festive cheer. With over 1.6 million visitors prior to 2020 and an ever-increasing following, it’s undoubtedly the heart of Geelong’s holiday spirit.

This year’s Floating Christmas Tree opening celebrations promise to be the ‘best and biggest’ yet, offering a Saturday night filled with wonder and joy.

Families partaking in the annual tradition of illuminating the tree will be treated to an entertainment line-up of epic proportions. Headliner Stellar Perry, Denis and Zoe Walter, Kim Cooper, Piano Bar Geelong’s Thomas Currie, and a special performance by the Geelong Schools Big Band will ensure a memorable evening. Hosted by Mark and Milly from bayFM, the night kicks off with roving entertainment at Steampacket Quay at 5:30 pm, followed by a two-hour stage show starting at 7:00 pm, complete with a First Nations Welcome to Country and a show-stopping performance.

The stage show runs from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, culminating in the lighting of the Floating Christmas Tree at 9:00 pm, accompanied by low-level fireworks.

For the very first time, festive locals and those alike will have the opportunity to experience the Opening Night of Christmas in Geelong through a livestream. While it may not quite capture the full splendour of being there in person, this is fantastic news for those who not local, overseas or unable to attend in person.

The stunning Floating Christmas Tree Sound and Light Shows takes place nightly from 8:30 pm to midnight, with three unique shows to experience. Each show, approximately six minutes in length, is repeated every 15 minutes. Be sure not to miss any of them; they each offer a different light show and music production worth catching.

There are three shows to enjoy.

  • 11 November – 1 December
  • 2 December – 25 December
  • 26 December – 7 January

While at the tree between 8:30 pm and midnight, you can also interact with the interactive website, changing the tree and star’s light colours. This feature will be activated once the tree arrives, adding an extra layer of enchantment to your visit.

The ninth installation of Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree, this 25-metre-tall marvel is moored at Steampacket Quay, Waterfront Geelong, near the Carousel, ensuring it remains a prominent feature throughout the festive season.

Alongside this festive structure, Geelong also offers a multitude of Christmas activities to enjoy, including Projections on City Hall, an Art Trail, Interactive Windows, School Trees, Christmas at Home, and Santa’s Craft Workshop.
