Arriving in the arts hub’s 40th year, the Winter Escape Season will welcome live audiences back to the redeveloped Costa Hall, Ryrie Street Building, and beyond to witness a fabulous and diverse array of performances.
With art and community, growth in activity, innovation, outstanding spaces and people at its heart, the new season signifies a slight ‘departure’ from their traditional Deakin University Theatre Season, injecting a renewed sense of artistic energy and excitement into the region.
Kicking off in May, the season is an extraordinary journey into Bizet’s famous opera, theatre and a bonkers comedy lecture about love songs, to quirky cabaret and one of our First People’s most illuminating voices, Archie Roach who will present an intimate, moving and often confronting account of his resilience, strength of spirit and also a great love story.
There’s even a performance from the most-streamed First Nations pop artist in the world, Isaiah, and a delightful, modern comedy-drama that will have audiences laughing, crying and celebrating the grit and dare of Australia’s trailblazing women.
If you’re looking for something that dives deep into the injustice’s women face, Prima Facie will be one to get to in August. Winner of the 2018 Griffin Award, this gripping one-woman show is an indictment of the Australian legal system’s failure to provide reliable pathways to justice for women in rape, sexual assault or harassment cases. It’s a work of fiction, but one that could have been ripped from the headlines of any paper, any day of the week, so common you could cry.
This season launch follows the success of February’s brilliant Summer Sessions under the Rippleside Big Top, which featured some of Australian comedy’s biggest names like Tommy Little, Cal Wilson, Claire Hooper, Dave Thornton and Dilruk Jaysinha; a plethora of musical artists across multiple genres – ARIA Award-winner Clare Bowditch, post-post-modern diva Meow Meow, jazz crooners The Syncopators, cabaret queen Dolly Diamond and theatrical Silvie Paladino; and an assortment of family acts.
