G: Zines: The new zine vending machine in Geelong is launching this Saturday

Words by Staff Writer

Launching as part of the National Gallery of Victoria's 2024 Melbourne Art Book Fair, G: Zines gives local comic book artists, writers and visual artists an outlet to sell their zines, artist's books and alternative publications.

G: Zines new vending machine is arriving into Geelong Library and Heritage Centre this weekend. The new initiative from local community arts organisation, G: Zines, who run monthly ‘swap and sell’ events, zine making workshops and has built an active zine community since launching in late 2023, sees them place local artists at the forefront, allowing them a space to sell their products.

The official vending machine launch will be taking place this Saturday 1 June from 12.00PM – 1.00PM at the new permanent location of Level 2 – Geelong Library & Heritage Centre, with a special commencement from Major Trent Sullivan.

G:Zines’ new vending machine allows local creatives the opportunity to buy and sell zines. The zine machine holds up to thirty different titles at any one time; with small publications consisting of alternative commentaries, telling personal stories or having a range of artworks inside. With zines (short for magazines or fanzines) one of the backbones of the publication world, building strong, dedicated communities to share in niche subjects, this project allows for a multitude of voices to be heard.

Locally handmade comics, artist books and short stories can all be accessed whenever the Geelong Library is open to the public, offering ‘tap and go’ to pay with ease, meaning in no time a new zine can be yours to enjoy!

“The G: Zines vending machine allows local audiences, plus zine and artist book makers an opportunity to buy or sell their zines in the Geelong region. Offering something that was formerly unavailable locally, meaning creatives had to travel to Melbourne or further afield to buy, enjoy or share their zines,” says G: Zine committee member Glen Smith.

This project has been generously supported by a City of Greater Geelong community grant and is presented in partnership with the Geelong Regional Libraries, with the launch event falling under the NGV 2024 Melbourne Art Book Fair Regional Program.

In addition, G: Zines will also be offering a range of free kids and adult zines making workshops from 1pm – 4pm the following day as part of the Melbourne Art Book Fair Regional Program.
