First launched in 1996 as a fundraiser for the Mittagundi Outdoor Education Center, Folk Rhythm and Life has grown into a grassroots cultural landmark. Over nearly three decades, the festival has become a beloved fixture on the summer calendar, drawing attendees of all ages to its vibrant mix of live music, arts, and workshops.
This year’s event holds special significance, marking a return after years of challenges including bushfires, floods, the pandemic and other struggles, so organizers aim to renew the festival’s spirit as a beacon of hope and celebration.
The 2024 lineup is already packed with over 80 acts, including The Deans, Whiskey Dram, Deadnecks, The Offtopics, Son Quba, Charlie Needs Braces, and Turtle Skull, with more announcements to come. DJs and live comedy will keep the good vibes flowing, while the open mic stage makes a triumphant return, inviting musicians to showcase their talents in spontaneous jam sessions.
Folk Rhythm and Life stands out for its inclusive ethos: every ticket holder is a VIP, and even performers are known to volunteer and mingle with attendees. The stunning northeast Victorian landscape, complete with an omega-shaped swimming hole, yoga and healing villages, and a kid-friendly entertainment hub, creates a welcoming space for creativity and connection.
Sustainability is also central to the festival, featuring composting toilets and wholesome food options for all diets. With workshops, live comedy, and plenty of opportunities to form lifelong memories, the Bilyana plains offer a perfect backdrop for this celebration of music, art, and community.
