When it comes to musicians coming out of regional Victoria, we’re spoilt for choice. Maybe it’s something about that fresh air that fuels creative masterminds, but we can’t complain. Here’s a small look at the acts we’ll be keeping our eye on this year – you should too.
Baked Beans
After performing at Gizzfest late last year, that’s almost praise enough you’re onto a good thing. They hit that surf-garage-indie-rock sound quite nicely. We hear there’s a new release coming, and that’s definitely something to look out for in 2017.

Tiber
With an EP released in November last year, Tiber has made a grand ol’ entrance at the end of 2016 after getting picked up by the likes of Fbi radio, inthemix, Pilerats and of course triple j. Dom Alessio of triple j’s Home and Hosed said in a review Tiber’s “bringing funk back to the dancefloor”. Hold onto your seat when listening to his EP Self Control. This producer has already been doing the traps around Melbourne, making bodies sweaty and doing Geelong proud.

Gymnastics in the ’70s
Also releasing an EP in 2016 (Daylessness, May 2016), Gymnastics in the 70s achieved a lot in 2016 and we imagine the trajectory is set to continue. With a blissful, brand of indie rock, it echoes an ease and comfort with each track. The vocals at times weave into The Rubens’ territory – and we know how much everyone loves them.

The Second Sex
With not much on the interwebs in regards to music, appreciating this band truly comes from seeing them live – and in 2016 they racked up a decent list of shows. Expect a whole bunch of raw femininity delivered in a manic blend of grunge/pop-punk/hardcore.

Hills Hoist
Taking cues from the 60/70s, these guys have big things planned for 2017. At least, that’s what we hope from this here list. With an LP, Hibernation, set for release this year, things are already on to a big start.
Listen to: ‘Mirror Bush’

As with all lists, there are still many, many more regional acts to watch. But from this list are ones that are looking to be doing exciting things and progressing their careers in 2017. We welcome any suggestions as well.
