If there’s one country that’s absolute heaven for food lovers, it’s Vietnam. With French influence in many of the dishes there, the food is fragrant and full of flavour.
For many Geelong locals looking for an authentic fragrant and flavoursome feed, Family Pho Geelong has been the go-to for some pho-king amazing (sorry we had to) Vietnamese food since opening their doors back in September two years ago.
Not only living up to the authentic Southeast Asian standards since their beginnings, but Family Pho Geelong also goes above and beyond… so much so that they’re now opening a second location this weekend.
Taking over the old Gloria Jeans at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, this little food haven is finally opening this weekend and judging from their socials, it’s looking like we can expect a spacious venue with contrasting natural wood and black finishes, leafy plants and minimalist furniture, tickled with upbeat colourful accent pieces that build an energised atmosphere. It’s exactly what you’d want to see from a modern yet authentic Vietnamese restaurant.
The best part, of course, is the extensive menu, which focuses on Vietnamese street and comfort food.
You’ll find a list of entrées, including homemade spring rolls, fresh and vibrant rice paper rolls, fried and steamed dumplings, as well as a selection of entrée soups, from chicken and corn to wonton and even chicken laksa. There’s even a potato prawn dish, which is deep-fried strips of potato wrapped around prawns… and that’s only the beginning.
The plethora of mouth-watering options continues with delicious Pho, noodle soups, good old-fashioned rice dishes, vermicelli noodle salads, and stir-fried noodles, as well as several types of chicken, pork, beef and seafood plates.
A real highlight has to be their ability to cater for all dietary requirements. Family Pho Geelong have a dedicated vegetarian menu listing close to 30 options. There is also a lengthy gluten-free menu which includes everything from rice paper rolls and noodle soups to stir-fried noodles and hearty meat and rice dishes, making life that little bit easier for some.
The real shining star (in our opinion) is the Banh mi that we’ll be able to score in Waurn Ponds. As the most vibrant and delicious sandwich in the world, this crunchy baguette is usually filled with a colourful combination of carrot, coriander, chilli, spring onion and your choice of either chicken, roast crackle pork, traditional cold sliced pork, providing the perfect balance of richness, acidity, texture, freshness and spice. In short, everything you could ever want in a sandwich and is a welcome addition to that side of town.
Best of all, the whole menu is at prices that won’t have you eating Vegemite crackers for a fortnight. With nothing over $20.50, Family Pho Geelong has taken Vietnamese cuisine back to its roots with tasty and hearty fare that won’t break the bank or your diet. Oh and for the first week, they’ll be offering 10% discounts on all dishes – win-win.
