The First Nations NBN Box Artwork Series aims to showcase the importance and significance of our First Nations art and culture and highlight the unique designs by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Geelong’s streets are about to become vibrant canvases, thanks to the First Nations NBN Box Design Commissions project.

The initiative, brought to life through a collaboration between the City of Greater Geelong, First Nations artists, and NBN Co, aims to showcase and celebrate the rich tapestry of First Nations art and culture.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here.

Eight talented artists have been selected to transform seven NBN boxes around the region, turning them into stunning pieces of art that tell important stories and pay homage to Indigenous heritage.

The project involved an Expression of Interest and selection process, culminating in the following artists being chosen for this unique opportunity:

  1. Billy Jay O’Toole
  2. Bri Apma Hayes
  3. Chloe Wegener
  4. Djamari and Lowell Hunter
  5. Michelle Searle
  6. Nikki McKenzie
  7. Ricky Abrahams

By the end of the year, a total of nine First Nations NBN box designs will create an exciting arts trail, leading from Marshall Reserve to central Geelong. The project has been thoughtfully developed with the guidance and advice of the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, ensuring cultural sensitivity and respect.

The artwork set to feature on NBN boxes promises to be striking and thoughtful, telling important stories and amplifying the voices of First Nations people. These designs transcend boundaries, evoking deep connections and narratives that resonate with the entire community.

Andrea Appleby, NBN Co General Manager of National Stakeholder Engagement, emphasized the significance of the collaborative project in sparking essential conversations and promoting a better understanding of Greater Geelong’s diverse First Nations community. With the largest population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in Victoria, the NBN box series offers an opportunity to share their unique perspectives and stories.

“Greater Geelong has the largest population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in Victoria, all with different perspectives and stories, and the series offers the opportunity to share a part of that.

“We look forward to seeing the next seven First Nations designs wrap NBN boxes by the end of the year.”

Local First Nations artists are creating stunning artworks for Greater Geelong’s NBN Boxes

Already, two NBN boxes designed by Jenna Oldaker and Norm Stanley at Marshall Reserve have brightened up the area with their vibrant artwork. The upcoming additions by the selected artists are set to continue this artistic journey, contributing to a deeper appreciation of Indigenous heritage.

Nikki McKenzie, one of the chosen artists, expressed her deep honor to be featured on the NBN boxes. She sees these art installations as a powerful reminder to the public that they are standing on Aboriginal land. Through her work, she encapsulates the essence of the theme “Always Was and Always Will Be,” showcasing a profound connection to Country.

Chloe Wegener, another talented artist, shared her excitement as a first-time commission applicant.

“It is such a great opportunity for First Nations artists to show their work publicly,” Wegener says.

“My art is influenced by colours and feelings and speaks to the interconnectedness to land, featuring the connection to Country and greenery around us.”

The First Nations NBN Box Design Commissions project is not just about adding artistic flair to the city; it’s about honoring and preserving the stories, heritage, and culture of Geelong’s First Nations community.

As the project progresses, these art-adorned NBN boxes will serve as lasting reminders of the land’s rich history and the enduring spirit of its Indigenous custodians.
