Eat Local Month: Enjoy the tastes of the Surf Coast

April is set to be the month all about good food, great wine, meeting new people and learning from the growers themselves. Coined as Eat Local Month, this is a month-long food and farming festival that aims to unite food lovers, families, and farmers across various locations and give them the chance to experience the tastes of the Surf Coast and surrounds.

With just one month dedicated to explore the delicious food of independent growers, restaurant and food artisans in the region (personally we think it should be every month), it’s designed to make people aware of the wide range of local produce available in our region, according to Eat Local Month organiser, Sarah Bolus. “It’s a unique festival that allows people to really get out and learn more about our local food system,” she says. Connecting consumers with farmers, Bolus started the festival three years ago, growing on its offering each year, setting up events that see the region thrive.

It consists of a series of regional markets celebrating everything local along with some special activities along the way. To highlight a few, Geelong’s Little Green Corner is hosting a Meet the Maker evening for producers, artisans and ‘wanna-be’ farmers, while the Torquay Farmer’s Market and the Winchelsea Makers and Growers Market will be a direct opportunity to meet local makers.

To further delve into the food-inspired activities, the festival will feature the quirky Geelong Bee-keeping Field Day which will see an array of demonstrations, mini workshops and delicious honey tastings. The festival also hosts a range of other learning experiences of butchery and bread baking to exclusive dining experiences and local foodie meet-ups over the month.

Other events include the Artisan Food and Fibre Showcase in Colac where you’ll find the Otway’s amazing makers, growers and producers, a country Autumn Fair in Moriac, complete with workshops, cooking classes, market stalls, live music and a special family Easter Egg Hunt.

Not only does the event pay homage to those that grow, bake and craft, but it also aims to create a culinary experience for the whole family with animal feeding, scone making, worm farming and Story Time sessions to entertain the little ones.

Prepare for a month of everything from fresh local produce and bounty grown, to produce created by chefs, artisan producers, along with craft brewers and winemakers, and discover something new.
