E-Book platform Scribd has landed in Australia with an unlimited monthly subscription service

Words by Natasha Tupackovski

Exciting news for bookworms, audiobook junkies and content lovers everywhere.

With reading rating as one of Australia’s top three leisure activities, Scribd’s comprehensive selection of content gives us more of what we want: a chance to explore from widely-known bestsellers to niche titles and publications and to discover something new every day.

Being a top-performing reading platform in the US since its beginning in 2007 with more than 100 million monthly readers across the globe, Scribd is now available for Australian readers.

At Scribd, we believe in the power of the written (and spoken) word

To celebrate the Australian launch, Scribd has announced a deal with some of Australia’s leading publishers including Allen & Unwin, Murdoch Books, Simon & Schuster Australia, HarperCollins Publishers Australia and Fremantle Press, making the platform available for just $13.99/month. With this, Scribd subscribers have unlimited access to over two million local and international ebooks, as well as an industry-leading selection of audiobooks, journal articles, leading newspapers, magazines, sheet music, and more. The platform even offers Scribd Originals – Scribd’s own original and exclusive content.

Available on iOS and Android devices, as well as web browsers, they are even offering a 30-day free trial where new Aussie subscribers will have unlimited access to a market-leading catalog that boasts greats from the likes of Trent Dalton, Jodi Picoult, Jane Harper, and Mark Manson of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.

Keep up with the latest in entertainment via our website.

As a huge reader myself I investigated Sribd’s offer and I found myself immersed in the range. There is so much we have missed out on during this pandemic it would be such a shame to waste any more time trying to find the right bookstore when Scribd is at our fingertips. This platform offers a chance for new and old readers to find a new author to love, and perhaps even an opportunity to discover a new genre to listen/read this season.

Some of my personal favourites include The Alchemist by Paulo Chelo, Animal Farm by George Orwell, Everything is f*ked by Mark Manson, Wild by Cheryl Strayed and Elanor Oliphant by Gail Honeyman.

Keen to give it a whirl? To get you started, we recommend checking out these five titles. You’ll fall in love, we promise.

Black Imagination: Black Voices on Black Futures by Natasha Marin

A stirring celebration of Black voices in the form of short stories and poetry. Dedicated to “the beauty, strength, and enduring resilience of Black People everywhere,” this collection brings together individual creators who reflect on, and revel in, Black joy, healing, and the imagining of a world where all Black folks are loved, safe, and valued. Moving narration from Daveed Diggs and Lena Waithe (stars of the latest musical to hit Australian shores, Hamilton) help bring these diverse experiences to life — listen to them sparkle and shine.
Available as a book or audiobook.

Scrublands by Chris Hammer

Scrublands is the first novel by Australian author Chris Hammer. The story is set in the fictitious town of Riversend in New South Wales during a period of intense drought, and revolves around a small-town priest who kills five of his parishioners before being shot himself, and a journalist’s investigation into his motivations.
Available as a book or audiobook.

All Our Shimmering Skies by Trent Dalton

All Our Shimmering Skies is the follow-up to Boy Swallows Universe we could have never imagined, but the one Dalton was destined to gift us. It’s a story of heroes and villains, foxes and water buffalo, fighter planes and birds of prey, real magic and real love, epitaphs and aphorisms, lost treasure and lost life. It’s a love letter to the nation. It’s your favourite childhood adventure story dictated by Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman and William Shakespeare, with a score by Franz Liszt. It’s dead serious. It’s completely ridiculous. It’s all of these things and more.
Available as a book or audiobook.

The Dry by Jane Harper

A story of desperation, resolution and small-town prejudice, played out against the blistering extremes of life on the land. Amid the worst drought to ravage Australia in a century, a farmer turns his gun on his family and then himself. As questions mount and suspicion casts a long shadow over the parched town, specialist investigator Aaron Falk is forced to confront the community that rejected him twenty years earlier.
Recently adapted into a feature film starring Australia’s Eric Bana and airing in cinemas nationwide, The Dry is available as an audiobook.

The Paris Affair by Pip Drysdale

The dark and sexy new thriller from the bestselling author of The Sunday Girl and The Strangers We Know. Harper Brown is an expert at picking locks, breaking her way out of car boots, talking her way out of trouble and she could run a masterclass on escaping relationships – her record for losing a guy is three minutes flat. After having her heart broken helping her ex follow his dreams, Harper has moved to Paris to fulfill hers. She’s talked her way into a job as an arts journalist, a stepping stone to her dream role as an investigative journalist. All she has to do is whatever it takes to get there. But then one night she meets the artist Noah X, and everything she thinks she knows is turned upside down. Soon Harper finds herself entangled in a web of lies, hot on the trail of a murderer and the scoop of a lifetime. This is the story that could make her career – if the killer doesn’t catch her first.
Available as an audiobook.
