The musical marks a huge coup for NSW, with the Government partnering with Disney Theatrical Productions to secure the Australian premiere season of the much-loved story, which will be gloriously and locally produced with spectacular new sets, costume designs, state-of-the-art technology and an Australian cast.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said Beauty and the Beast would be a major drawcard for Sydney that would provide significant benefits for the NSW visitor economy (thanks to all us Victorians who are itching to see this epic tale!!).

Minister for Tourism Ben Franklin said Sydney’s devoted theatre-goers were in for a treat when the internationally acclaimed production makes its Australian premiere in June 2023.

“Disney’s Beauty and The Beast is an international sensation that has played to more than 35 million people in 13 countries,” Mr Franklin said.

“Sydney is a city of the stage and this reimagining of one of the world’s most beloved musicals will dazzle devotees of the original production, while also captivating a new generation of fans.”

Exact dates haven’t been confirmed as yet, with June 2023 the only indicator of when the tale arrives Down Under.

This new Beauty and the Beast production emerged in the UK back in 2021 and reworks the original show that premiered in the US in the 90s, adapting Disney’s hit 1991 animated movie musical. The original Broadway production came to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in 1996, starring Hugh Jackman as Gaston, Bert Newton as Cogsworth and Rachel Beck as Belle.

With the renowned Oscar-winning and Tony-nominated score courtesy of composer Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice, including all the beloved tunes such as ‘Be Our Guest’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’, the original creative team from the production’s 1994 Broadway debut, which ran for 13 years, is back on deck for the Australian show. The team includes choreographer and director Matt West and costume designer Ann Hould-Ward, who won a Tony Award for her work on the show.
