Beloved late-night dessert bar Armageddon Cake announces plans to return to Geelong

Geelong’s original night time dessert bar since 2011 is planning to come back, offering a place where we can go at night to get cake, coffee, and conversation (without the need for dinner or a beer).

How good is heading to a dessert bar and indulging in the sweetest of treats? How long is a piece of string?

Announced this week Geelong’s much-loved Armageddon Cake is planning on coming back, gifting locals and tourists alike a sugar mecca that will torpedo your diet and make the top button of your jeans explode.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Famed for its original quaint and retro location down McLarty Place, Armageddon Cake has been an institution in Geelong for just over ten years, often regarded as a place to escape the madness of the world, sit back and relax – and have a laugh over board games with friends.

Armageddon Cake Dessert Bar made the move from its original small premises in a laneway of Little Malop St to a much larger space on Malop St, along the Green Spine, in 2018, before having made the difficult decision to close two years later, in 2020.

Now, under new management from Charles Corby, Armageddon Cake is planning on making its triumphant return to a new secret location. In a post to socials, Corby announced he will be bringing back everything about Armageddon that we knew and loved – the speciality coffee and cake, table games, original art, old magazines and vintage decor that screams ‘If Granny was a murderer, this is what her home would look like!’.

The favourite cakes will be back on the menu, including the Baked New York Cheesecake, the Salted Caramel Mousse Cake, and the Death by Chocolate Mudcake, and the store will open at nights from around 7pm until late.

A location and date of opening will be revealed in time, but in the meantime the business has launched a GoFundMe.

“Like many small businesses, we were struck down by COVID – but the exciting news is… WE ARE COMING BACK! Now we need YOUR help,” the GoFundMe reads.

“This Go Fund Me aims to raise the last bit of capital needed to reopen Armageddon Cake. We have been excitedly working towards this and will open right after we reach our funding goal. Every dollar that you can spare will be a huge help us and will go directly into re-opening.”

Armageddon Cake’s GoFundMe aims to raise $17,900 to cover the remaining costs of opening the business. The funds have said to go toward “everything you know and love about Armageddon Cake, including Vintage couches, tables and chairs; board games, art and knick-knacks for fun at the tables; luscious cakes that you know and love; glass fridges to keep the cakes fresh and glowing; vintage lamps and lighting; character signage and cheery coat of paint”.

The money raised will also go towards coffee machinery, kitchen fit-out, permits and documents, plumbing and electrical improvements, cleaning supplies, fire extinguishers and smoke alarms; and the rental bond and upfront rent for the new premises.

“The shop is now under new management and not associated with the most recent owners. However, the new owners are crew from the original McLarty Place laneway store who understand the soul and heart of Armageddon.

“We can’t wait to see your happy faces again very soon!”

At the time of writing, $1010 had already been raised since the GoFundMe launched on Thursday night.
