Dark desires and devotion: Frolic Dark Rainbow Festival heads to Ballarat oozing with immersive thrill

Words by Paddy Coppinger

Bold, edgy, dark, and unapologetically queer.

The sensory feast that is Frolic Dark Rainbow festival is coming back to Ballarat from June 11 to 13, brimming with talent and charisma. Unapologetically queer and bold, this festival is one not to be missed on your winter schedule.

This year, there will be 11 very special and unique events over three days. Spend your days at the Frolic Cabaret at the Piano Bar, featuring 2021 Adelaide fringe festival winners The Leather Lungs, hosted by Aurora Kurth. The black light disco Blanke Pop Dance Party at Volta. The Dirty Rainbow After Party oozing with talent like DJs Sugar Sphinx and Bangerz N Mash, or the Dirty Rainbow Immersive Art Experience held at a former meat factory, where you’ll delve into the wonderful world of light projections, performance art and live music, all made better with trickles of mulled wine from Odin’s Feast.

This is a festival made for Ballarat, pushing the boundaries of what an LGBTIQA+ festival in country Victoria can be, with a roster bursting with nationally recognised talent set to draw crowds from all over the country.

Jay Morrison, the festival’s director, says this year’s Frolic festival isn’t the community-minded, family-friendly affair one might think (like previous years), but an adult, darker celebration of queer culture designed to push what can be achieved and expected in an event of its type.

So being immersed and entertained, whilst totally in awe, will be a given, and it’s happening right in country Victoria’s heart. So free your schedule people, and do yourself the favour.
