In one of the most important events on the 2020 calendar; one that seeks to answer the burning question of ‘who is dishing up Australia’s best pie’.
That’s right, the Baking Association of Australia has held its annual competition in Sydney over the weekend, awarding of the much-coveted title of Australia’s Best Pie.
With almost 2000 entries from more than 300 Aussie bakeries across dozens of categories and three-days of crucial taste testing, the judges declared Victoria’s Country Cob Bakery the winner of the coveted prize with their pepper-beef pie.
This is the third year in a row their bakery has taken out the top spot, previously winning the prize for its caramelised pork and pepper pie last year and for its seafood-satay pie the year prior.
The esteemed bakery, located in the regional town of Kyneton and Melbourne’s eastern suburb of Boronia and ran by baker brothers Ryan and Chan Khun, also took out prizes in four other categories incluidng Australia’s best plain beef pie; best gourmet pie (for the barbequed pork and quail egg creation); best flavoured beef pie (another win for the pepper-beef); and best vegetarian or vegan pie (for the curried cauliflower, lentil and chickpea).
Talk about over-achievers! According to their website, they’re even delivering this award-winning pie across metro Melbourne and regional Victoria, including Bendigo, Ballarat, Hepburn Shire and Geelong.
There’s more good news for those of us in Forte land, with news that a team of bakers from Ballarat also won a swag of medals at the competition.
Online and wholesale bakery Emma’s was awarded gold medals for its brazilian pulled beef pie, and vegetable coconut curry pie; as well as silver medals for its plain mince beef pie, moroccan pulled chicken pie, sweet and sour pulled pork pie, and traditional pastie.
