Cooper Lower: Mysteries of Midnight

Cooper Lower: Mysteries of Midnight

Cooper Lower’s third album is a beautiful display of exactly who he is as a musician: original, thought-provoking and meticulous. With heart-cracking vocals, Lower brings soul and vitality into each of these five tracks.
Influenced by the likes of John Butler, Ed Sheeran and Lewis Watson, the soulful acoustic muso takes you on a journey. From the beginning to the end, you’re transported into another place which almost leads you to believe Lower polished his sets as part of the vibrant busking scene in Byron Bay.
Opening the album with ‘Mysteries of Midnight’, you are immediately drawn to the music; “It’s a quest to find your innocence, and replace it with something more, put your faith in mystery and take a walk with me, we are youthful and ready to fall…” before Lower launches in to his signature acoustic-guitar slapping technique, which he blends with slower and sombre tones and alluring lyrics for the duration of the song.
Assured but unassuming, Lower maintains a stripped-back, home-grown feel with a voice that is simultaneously powerful and gentle as he weaves his way through each song. With each new verse in ‘Wanderlust Heart’, Lower leaves his listener questioning the story behind it, proving his pronounced adept as a lyricist. The first line in the chorus is hauntingly beautiful in itself; “With a wanderlust heart and a troubled mind, it’s no wonder you can’t understand….” suggesting darkness surrounding a relationship with someone who has the desire to discover all of the unknown, then using lines such as “you could play the victim, infect yourself with something you believe in… you could play the fearless man, Achilles won’t you come on down and see this,” further showcasing the chaos of ones often tortuous emotions. Check the track below.
The album is an elegant showcase of Lower’s obvious technical abilities and musical finesse, from his good sense of rhythm and melody to his polished song structure. Lower brings a wonderful sense of familiarity to the listener with each song and distinguishes himself as an unique and gripping artist. It’s not too early to say this album will be one of my favourites for the year.
