A wondrous dance party is heading to regional Victoria to fulfil all your funk and soul desires.
There’s just something entirely infectious about funk and soul music. With syncopated rhythms and the melodic grooves of funk, and the punch-you-in-the-gut emotion of soul, it genuinely has a way of getting listeners in a good mood.
It’s the perfect basis for a night out in regional Victoria, especially when it’s at the hands of Melbourne soul and funk institution Cookin’ On 3 Burners, who will perform in Birregurra this May.
Stay up to date with all the music events and festivals happening in and around the region here.
A three-piece responsible for pushing out funk and soul to the world from the musical heartland of Melbourne since 2001, Cookin’ On 3 Burners have become renowned as Australia’s hardest hitting Hammond Organ Trio. Well-known for the array of musical guests they have been involved in their process over their career, you’d probably recognise the band by way of a collaboration with French producer Kungs and the remix of their soul classic “This Girl”. The track hit #1 on the Billboard charts in 10 countries and was the most Shazamed dance song of 2016.
With Jake Mason’s swirling Hammond sitting atop a hard-grooving left-hand bass that blends seamlessly with Dan West’s twanging guitar stylings and Ivan ‘Choi’ Khatchoyan’s benchmark drum breaks, this is one band that continues to go from strength to strength, earning a solid reputation for their deeply infectious live shows.
Hailed as a must-see, Cookin’ On 3 Burners will ignite the state at Birregurra Hall on Saturday, May 28 for a huge night of soul and funk bangers. With their sweet soul and dirty dance floor funk, the trio will be joined on the stage by the Queen o’ Soul, Ms Stella Angelico.
Strong, powerful, and feminine, the inimitable Angelico has toured across Australia and Europe with the Melburnian soul trio, with whom she co-wrote the track ‘Sweet Talker’, a result of Melbourne’s passionate music community.
And as an extra treat, top and tailing the show, DJ Sugar D (AKA Dannii-Elle Goff) will be setting the dancefloor on fire with vintage 50s and 60s soul and RnB, and 60s and 70s funk. Get jumping and jiving to Motown classics and Northern Soul bangers with Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knights and the Pips, Martha and the Vandellas and more.
We’re already preppin’ our dancing shoes – this will be a night of absolute groovin’.
It all goes down at the Birregurra Hall in Birregurra on Saturday, May 28 from 7pm. Purchase tickets here.
This event is part of On the Road Again, a Victorian Government initiative to bring live music back across the state.
