This game-changing project is set to transform a historic church into Geelong’s go-to venue for live music, comedy, theatre, dance, and all kinds of performance, with an expected opening in early 2026.

Big things are happening in Geelong! The highly anticipated Church Redevelopment Project at Geelong Arts Centre is officially underway, marking an exciting new chapter for the region’s arts and culture scene.

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The redevelopment, located on Ryrie Street, will create an intimate, artist-led space designed to showcase independent and emerging talent. The new venue will not only provide a stage for diverse voices but will also support the growth of regional artistic careers, nurturing the next generation of creatives.

While the Church’s iconic historic façade – once hidden behind the old Band of Hope building – will remain a standout feature, the interior is in for a major overhaul. The team is set to revamp the structure with compliance works, acoustic treatments, and significant upgrades to make sure it’s the perfect setting for unforgettable performances. This project is set to preserve Geelong’s artistic heritage while looking to the future with a fresh, state-of-the-art space.

Geelong Arts Centre has enlisted award-winning local builders, Plan Group, to deliver the interior redevelopment alongside LIMINAL Architecture. The team is working hard to keep disruption to a minimum during construction, ensuring the project moves forward smoothly while respecting the local Arts Precinct and surrounding community.

Funded in part by the Victorian Government in 2019, the redevelopment is progressing thanks to the generosity of donors to The Church Giving Campaign. Despite rising construction and operational costs, fundraising efforts are still in full swing to help ensure that the venue remains accessible to local artists. Donors are contributing not only to the project’s immediate success but also to creating a lasting legacy for the arts in Geelong.

“We are very grateful for the generosity of our philanthropic supporters who have made this milestone possible. Together we share a deep commitment to preserving The Church’s rich history while celebrating its rebirth as a vibrant hub for
Geelong’s emerging musical artists” – Lesley Alway, Geelong Performing Arts Trust Chair

“We’ve listened to our local musicians and artists, and we know that access to affordable performance spaces is key to fostering a thriving creative scene,”

“This venue will serve as an incubator for live performance, ensuring emerging talent has the space and support needed to develop and showcase their work.” – Rhys Holden, Geelong Arts Centre CEO and Creative Director.

With donations over $2 being tax-deductible, there are plenty of ways for individuals and businesses to contribute and be a part of this transformative project. As the venue gets closer to its 2026 opening, the community’s support is more important than ever in ensuring the arts in Geelong continue to flourish.

Together, we’re building a future for the arts in Geelong – and it’s going to be extraordinary! For more information or to donate, go here
