Having announced that he would return to our shores in 2020 with a brand-new stand-up show, Ben Elton Live, back in 2019, Covid really threw a spanner in the works and we’ve spent a year with crossed fingers and toes in the hope that the tour would be rescheduled.

That time has come, and due to overwhelming demand by leagues of hungry fans, Elton has added even more dates to the forthcoming tour. What a treat.

In case you need a refresher, Ben Elton exploded onto the comedy scene more than 30 years ago, hosting Channel 4’s groundbreaking Saturday Live. Since then, Elton has achieved huge success as a stand-up comic, author, playwright, actor and director.

He’s written television shows such as The Young Ones, Blackadder 2, Blackadder The Third, Blackadder Goes Forth, The Thin Blue Line, the famous ‘exam’ episode of Mr Bean, the recent UK smash hit Upstart Crow and many more, as well writing and directing two feature films: 2000’s Maybe Baby and 2017’s Australian-made Three Summers.

He even wrote Kenneth Branagh’s critically acclaimed biopic of William Shakespeare All Is True which starred Judi Dench and Ian McKellen, and has published 16 best-selling novels, six of which became number one bestsellers.

Quite the career so far and that’s not even half of it. Elton is also widely known for his writing for the stage which includes three smash-hit West End plays and the global phenomenon We Will Rock You based on the music of British rock legends Queen.

A serial award winner, he has won three BAFTAs, two Laurence Olivier Awards, The Royal Television Society Writer’s Award, The Golden Dagger UK Crime Writer of the Year Award, The Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and the Eurovision Golden Rose D’Or Lifetime Achievement Award.

Having stepped away from stand-up and life on the road to concentrate on family and his many other creative outlets as outlined above, Elton found himself once again craving the connection with an audience only stand-up comedy can provide, and embarked on a sold-out 75-date tour of the UK in 2019, drawing rave reviews.

As the Evening Standard claimed, ‘there is nothing, absolutely nothing to beat Ben Elton live!’ and we are pretty stoked to be given the opportunity to find that out for ourselves. Better see a chiropractor ‘bout that funny bone, Ben Elton is back.

Catch Ben Elton at Melbourne Hamer Hall on Monday, April 19 and at Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre on Wednesday, April 21. Tickets are on sale now via livenation.com.au.
