If the name Chubby Bao doesn’t give you some kind of indication as to what’s served at Belmont’s newest eatery then you’re clearly one of few lost souls out there who’ve never wrapped their hands around these pillowy soft, meat-filled, sandwich-like treats.
And it’s about time you did.
Located in the car park of the Magic Hand Carwash (on the corner of High Street and Roslyn Road) in Belmont, Chubby Bao is a tiny outpost of bao love, housed inside a delightful permanent food truck.

With a knack for running all kinds of catering and events, Chubby Bao is the passion project of Geelong residents Frank and Linda Han, bringing out the best of their culture and Frank’s decade-long experience working as a chef across different cuisines.
Here you’ll find steamed buns with a variety flavours and fillings, including fried chicken, pork belly, beef brisket, and Furikake prawn – the choices are all intriguing and, no matter which you end up choosing, your bun will be stuffed full of quality fillings.
Vegetarians are also well serviced with two tasty bao varieties: the ‘Forest’ with mixed mushroom, water chestnut, cabbage, carrot, garlic, spring onion and peanut; and ‘Nightshade’ with eggplant, carrot and Szechuan glaze.

Still hungry? You can also indulge in sides Chubby Bao’s signature fried chicken, sweet potato fries, pulled beef fries, and the morish Edamame.
“We hope our little business not only fills your tummies but also brings you a little taste of Asia, an experience of mixed cultures and most importantly, a sense of comfort – which is much needed for us all at this uncertain and challenging time,” Frank and Linda share.
Open Thursday from 6pm, and Friday through to Sunday from 5pm, Chubby Bao will fast become the go-to place when the craving for bao kicks in, which is about as often as we’re breathing.
