Rain, hail or shine, the drag races of the 1950s and 60s went off regardless. Tearing up the dirt and mud, flicking it up into the wheel trims and panels of the hundreds of cars and bikes that took its path. Chopped festival is homage to this time and with 20 plus bands performing, it’s an event that’s for the rockers, the petrol heads, hipsters and greasers.
What’s the go?
Get there and enjoy head-to-head two-lane dirt drags with pre ’65 style hot rods, customs, bobbers and choppers. There’s also music across the three days, to further set off the whole experience. This is also a camping festival, so get your shit in order because you’ll be pitching a tent. Unless you’re a sleep-in-the-car kind of person.
Who’s playing?
Some come for the cars and others come for the music, either way, there’s no judgement at Chopped. This year take in sets from: Reverend Horton Heat, The Meanies, Guantanamo Baywatch, Puta Madre Bros, Drunk Mums, The Cherry Dolls, Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk, The Pinheads, West Thebarton Brothel Party, The Shabbab, Seppparton Airplane, La Mancha Negra, The Reprobettes, Flour, Amyl & the Sniffers, Slim Customers, King Puppy & the Carnivore, The Cha Cha Chas, Tape Wolves, Red Brigade, Itchy Scabs, Double Ya D & the Saddies.
Visiting the Palace.
Right in view of the drag strip, the Tiki Palace, is the island oasis of Chopped. You’ll often find many a punter having a profound life experience at this here bar. Be sure to try the signature Chopped cocktail while you’re there. There’s also “Ole Smoky Moonshine Cabin” which is relatively self explanatory. Pull yourself up a log, grab a jar of moonshine and throw it back.
The party on wheels.
Perhaps one of the most original stages in festivals these days is the Wolfman’s One Man Band Truck. Snaking its way through the festival from the early hours of the morning until late, this stage is said as the party on wheels. Catch it and jump on board.
