The title ‘Kurrigoyung’, meaning ‘shark’ in the GuriNgai peoples language, is inspired by a powerful and unforgettable adventure that Charlie had while fishing on a kayak in a crystal-clear lagoon.
“I gutted a parrot fish on the sand, only to have two wobbegong sharks appear, trying to snatch it from my hands. It was a tense, awe-inspiring experience, as I struggled to hold onto the fish and keep it for dinner.” This vivid encounter forms the heart of the song and its accompanying video, which fuses video and animation to highlight the intense beauty of the ocean, the animals within it, and the importance of safeguarding them.
A critical element of the video is its visual metaphor; an oil stain slowly spreads across the screen, following the shark as it moves through the water. The stain serves as a stark and impactful reminder of the environmental threats that we face daily—especially the destruction of our oceans and waterways—and the fragile balance of our natural world.
As Charlie Needs Braces continues to tour across Victoria, the band will also be making an appearance at the Shedshaker Brewing in Castlemaine, where they’ll bring their deeply reflective music to a wider audience. Following that, they’ll return to Naarm (Melbourne) for a headline album launch at Shotkickers on Friday 2 May.
‘Kurrigoyung’ is available to watch now, with the album NYAA WA streaming across all platforms.
