Celebrate the ladies in your life with these local events for International Women’s Day

Words by Mackenzie Pennycook

Celebrate the women in your life and see some of the best venues Geelong has to offer this International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day is fast approaching this year. Universally celebrated on March 8 (this Monday), this day is dedicated to promoting equality and celebrate women’s achievements, while also looking at what we can do to continue doing so in the future to help forge a gender-equal world.

This year’s theme is ‘Choose to Challenge’ and aims to showcase how change originates from a challenge, encouraging individuals to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. While we suggest you go that extra mile for the females in your life every day, this day provides a platform for everyone to join in on the wider conversation that acknowledges women in all their diversities.

Geelong is hosting a number of events throughout the week during International Women’s Day, if you’d like to show support and celebrate the ladies in your life here are some local events you can attend:

Blackmans Brewery

Celebrate the women in your life with a free pint at Blackmans Brewery Torquay. Their women’s day event will be held on Wednesday the 10th of March at 5.30pm in their beer garden. You’ll be able to chat with local and inspirational women who are all following their passions. The stellar line-up of women who will be speaking at the event includes Jessie Jungawalla, the founder of Craft Instinct; Katie Trail, founder of seed blog and Sarah Boak, the female cricket coordinator for the Torquay Tigers.

To secure your spot (and your free pint) email Jess at [email protected]

Edge Diamond Party

Grab your favourite ladies and spend an afternoon at Edge for their Diamond Party. The event will be held on Sunday the 7th of March from 3pm and tickets to the event include five Grey Goose cocktails, DJs and all-white dress code.

The Diamond Party is sure to be a big one for Edge, so grab your favourite all-white outfit and your ticket and be sure to secure your spot. Tickets for the Diamond Party are $55 and are available here

Anther Distillery

Listen to inspiring women discuss the challenges they have overcome in their fields of hospitality, science and business at Anther Distillery on March 8th from 6-7. The North Geelong gin oasis is hosting a ‘choose to challenge’ themed event. Panellists at the event include Dr Dervilla Mcgowan, Joey Tai, and Shenai Jones and Narelle Needham (two brilliant industry minds from hospitality and business). Tickets to the event are $14 and include a cocktail, with those identifying as ‘women’ receiving a ‘wage gap discount’ of 13.4% off of their ticket, symbolising the average wage gap for women in Australia.

Breakfast at the Pier

Enjoy a breakfast overlooking the water and join two women in leadership at The Pier for their breakfast this International Women’s Day. Join Professor Catherine Bennett and Frances Diver, the CEO of Barwon Health as they share what it’s like to be women in leadership during a time of crisis. The breakfast will be held on Friday the 12th of March at 7am-8.45am.

The Cheese Society

With the beautiful collaboration between two local food and wine experts – The Cheese Society and Union Street Wine – blessing Geelong West in recent times, they’ve just given us another reason to visit with the upcoming informal night celebrating women producers of cheese and wine (and the yummy things that go with cheese) in honour of International Women’s Day. Australian producers include Clare Burder, Sutton Grange Winery, Clarence House Estate and more, while cheeses will come from Kris Lloyd, Woodside Cheese Wrights, Pecora Dairy, and Holy Goat Cheese – all businesses championed by women.

Entry is $35 (walk-ins only, not pre-ticketed) including a donation from the ticket price to Geelong Mums. You’ll get a glass of wine and cheese on arrival with further wine and cheese options available throughout the night.

Doors open at 6.15pm, closing at 9pm, with a venue limit of 20 people, so feel free to pop down at any point for a glass and a chat!

Geelong Gallery

On the 8th of March Geelong Gallery is doing free guided tours to explore some of their key works that are currently on display in the gallery. The guided tour will showcase their ‘Framing the Figure’ exhibition. The exhibits include works by Gabriella Mangano and Silvana Mangano, Deborah Paauwe, Polixeni Papapetrou and Anne Zahalka. There will be two tour times to explore the gallery, both sessions run for two hours, one beginning at 11am and the second session beginning at 2pm.

This event is completely free with no reservations or registrations required! Save the date for this one and be sure to have a suss at the best Geelong Gallery has to offer.
