Castlemaine State Festival 2015

2015 marks the Castlemaine State Festival’s 40th anniversary and 20th festival, so the mood in the camp is at an all-time high. Appropriately, the festival’s theme is Before & Beyond: 40 years & 20 Festivals, chosen to not only honour their remarkable past, but all that the future holds. Music, dance, theatre, story, film/music and visual arts will all feature. Finding highlights is as difficult as attempting to find a piece of hay in an incredibly large pile of needles, but let’s have a crack. El Son Entero (pictured), one of Cuba’s finest traditional bands, will be performing. Fuelled by six-stringed tres, full Afro-Cuban percussion, tight vocal harmonies and trumpet, prepare to be treated to irresistible rhythms. Then there is Dementia 13, a live cinematic journey. New Zealand’s Leon Radojkovic leads a crew of musicians and actors through a combination of spoken word and mechanical and digital sound design to accompany the films Dementia 13 and Carnival of Souls. Kids are not forgotten either, with plenty for the little ones, including the final day’s Garden Party. The Castlemaine State Festival takes place from March 13 through March 22.
