For centuries, cats and dogs have been important companions aboard ships, offering comfort and companionship to sailors who were often far from home. In the absence of family, pets became key emotional anchors for many seafarers, providing a sense of connection and affection in the midst of long voyages.
One of the highlights of the exhibition will be a selection of photographs by renowned Sydney photographer Sam Hood, who documented the lives of sailors on ships between 1900 and the 1950s. Hood’s candid snapshots capture the powerful bond between seafarers and their beloved pets. Though most of the people in these photographs remain unidentified, the love and attachment to their furry shipmates is undeniable.
So, if you’ve got a cat or dog who’s ever sailed with you, or if your pet is just a sea lover at heart, now’s your chance to showcase them! Submit your photos to be part of this heartfelt tribute to pets and their sailors.
