Calling all dog lovers, two non-for-profit organisations are looking for puppy carers across Victoria

We volunteer as tribute.

Alright dog lovers, it’s your time to shine.

If you A, live in a dog-friendly house; B, have some spare time on your hands, and C, absolutely love dogs; then becoming a puppy carer could be just the things to make 2021 your year.

Both Vision Australia (the not-for-profit organisation that provides services for those within the blind and low vision community) and Assistance Dogs Australia (a non-for-profit organisation providing accredited assistance dogs for persons living with a range of disabilities and disorders) are currently seeking a number of carers to look after adorable puppies.

The key takeaways

  • Vision Australia and Assistance Dogs Australia are looking for puppy carers
  • Both organisations will cover all equipment, food and health care costs
  • Applications are open now

For Vision Australia, they’re looking for people to provide a home for a seeing-eye dog puppy. Their duty will also be to socialise the puppy as well as teach them basic skills like toilet training, to sit and walk on a lead without pulling. All equipment, food, dog health care, vet costs and training will be covered by VA, and you’ll be given support and guidance from Vision Australia’s seeing-eye dogs team the entire time. It will only cost you your time and endless amounts of affection for the little puppers.

Currently, there’s specifically looking for people in east Melbourne to the Yarra Ranges, south-east of Melbourne to Portsea, the Bendigo region and surrounding suburbs, as well as Kensington, Flemington, North Melbourne, Ascot Vale and West Melbourne. You can sign up for an online information session and then apply to become a puppy carer here. The puppers need you.

Over at the Assistance Dogs Australia camp, they’re looking for people to look after their gorgeous eight-week old pups, so that they can grow into the little legends that will support the country’s most vulnerable, from people with physical disabilities, children living with autism to those suffering from PTSD.

While you don’t need to be a professional canine coach, you are required to be available to puppy classes and home visits, have access to a vehicle, allow the pupper to live inside and have a secured backyard. Perfect for those working at home, you can’t leave the puppy alone for more than four hours either. Unfortunately, families with children under five years old are ineligible. Just like above, all the food, training equipment, and dog health care are sorted by Assistance Dogs Australia for the duration of their stay, which is for around a year – yes a year with a puppy. Following that, your well-trained mini-me will head off to advanced training at Assistance Dogs Australia HQ before graduating and becoming someone’s forever companion.
