Butter the popcorn, The Pivotonian Cinema is reopening next month

Have you been missing movie theatres? The big screen, the darkness, the smell of buttery popcorn, the comfy seats?

Good news, Geelong movie fans: The Pivotonian Cinema is reopening on Thursday July 2, following Victoria’s easing of restrictions that allow cinemas to reopen for a maximum of 50 people per auditorium from June 22.

With social distancing likely to keep at least 65 per cent of seats vacant initially, the independently owned cinema has earned a strong reputation amongst local movie buffs over the last few years for its focuses on independent, ‘less commercial’ films, with thought-provoking dialogue and artistic cinematography. Boasting an intimate, wine bar feel with dimmed lighting and the warm orange of the logo throughout the venue, the new cinema season is a welcomed return for the region.

“We’re incredibly excited to resume offering Geelong and Surfcoast audiences our premium cinema experience daily from the 2nd July,” owner Mark Walter explains.

“We’ve implemented a range of social distancing and cleanliness practices (which can be found on our home page), so please ensure you pre-book online and make cashless purchases at the Candy Bar! We look forward to welcoming everyone back and of course, if you feel unwell please stay home.”

Kicking off the new cinema season, The Pivotonian will be screening four films worth your time and eating a bucket of popcorn to, including the engrossing and affecting documentary drama Honeyland; Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s comedy romp The Trip To Greece; a jaunt through India in an old Rolls Royce with Romantic Road and the visceral thriller In Fabric, by arthouse stalwart Peter Strickland.

Other titles coming soon include House Of Cardin, Deerskin and La Belle Epoque.

For specific dates and times of each individual film, head to the cinema website where you can pre-purchase your ticket.
