Beware the Wasp

Berlin is home to one of the world’s most vibrant music scenes. In their series on new music from around the world, Louder than War wrote: “Musically Berlin is teeming with variety. From jazz to noise and everything in between, it can be found here.” Berlin is also home to alt-country-folk singer-songwriter Wasp Summer. Wasp Summer, aka Sam Wareing, is an England-born, Aussie-raised gal going strong in the world of DIY. Or, as she would probably put things, DIT – that is, ‘Do it together’. The term comes from international artist collective, A Headful of Bees. In 2012 Wasp Summer released her debut album Close as a Slow Dance. Fuelled by her time in Melbourne and strengthened by her time in Berlin, the album features Aussie bassist Simon Morrison (Dead Sentries, Assassination Collective) and Alaskan drummer Ben Johnson (A Seated Craft). Wasp Summer is currently prepping Mitropa, a release due for early 2015, and one that will feature a full band. The songbird also recently recorded ‘Under the Sky’ for Running up the Hill: Kate Bush Covers for Reproductive Rights. The Eastern, Ballarat – November 21 & The Bridge, Castlemaine – November 22.
