Barwon Heads’ beloved Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary closes its doors

The local animal rescue centre has closed down after more than 45 years in Barwon Heads.

In devastating news for the region, Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary have announced its closure, with a new consolidated business to operate in Chewton.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Barwon Heads sanctuary confirmed the closure was due to the critical health of a family member.

“I wish to inform all our loyal visitors past and present that due to the critical health of a family member we have made the decision to consolidate our venues,” owner Tehree Gordon OAM said in the statement.

“Jirrahlinga will continue to perform all rehabilitation and rescue services as we have done since 1975, the only difference is that we will be based in one location.

“Effective immediately, Jirrahlinga at Taits Road Barwon Heads is closed, all the animals are in the process of being relocated to our Chewton Sanctuary.”

Established more than 45 years ago, the Barwon Heads sanctuary cares for injured wildlife and was home to a wide range of native Australian wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, turtles, lizards, emus, dingoes and birds.

The news comes after the sanctuary raised more than $80,000 in a public plea, revealing they needed to raise $50,000 to pay off their bills and give them room to continue supporting the animals in their care.

In the statement, Gordon ensured these funds have and will continue to go towards the animals.

“Rest assured all funds raised previously have and will continue to go towards our animal’s welfare and care.”

The business will now operate in Chewton and has rebranded as Jirrahlinga Dingo Conservation and Wildlife Education Centre. Visitors will be welcome at the sanctuary by appointment/booked tours once the animals have all settled into their new home.
