Ballarat progressive rockers SCY dive into the search for a deeper sound with new EP, ‘The Regretful Climb’

Words by Alex Lynch

Progressive, melodic, heavy goodness.

Released in 2021, SCY’s (previously known as Scyphozoan) newest creation ‘The Regretful Climb’ is a distinctive collaboration of unique sounds such as heavy metal inspired vocals to harmonious keys that would not traditionally blend well, but with SCY’s talents, they manage and do it well.

Exercising deep screaming vocals with more subtle clean vocals, prominent drums and a vast array of sounds ‘The Regretful Climb’ is deep dive into the search for a deeper sound.

From track one, the listener will get what is expected, fast hard-hitting metal with a good showcase of solid instruments. But it is not just metal you should expect, as ominous sounds emanate from most tracks, adding a hint of mystery that isn’t quite expected.

With a barrage of deep vocals, some parts of the album will hit the ears hard with a sense of great aggression. A power in their music that is all SCY. Parts of the album are melodically impressive and progress at a high level of craft while other parts are pure instrumental bliss.

This EP marks the follow up to SCY’s last album Arrive, which was released back in early 2020 and highlighed their heavy/progressive rock sounds mixed with some cosmic melodies.

SCY has worked hard to get to this point, ‘The Regretful Climb’ is further evidence that they continue to improve and create more powerful music.
