Ballarat Blog #668

The shortest day of the year has been and gone and winter has arrived with a vengeance as ice frosts over cars and greenery in the Rat. The best thing to do is find a watering hole that has top notch music, froffies and pub grub.

Suttons House Of Music has blues legend Lloyd Spiegel launching his new album This Time Tomorrow on Friday July 14. Spiegel’s powerful stage persona and command of the guitar has put him at the forefront of acoustic blues, enabling him to re-invent the style, while maintaining a close relationship with its foundations. It’s $20 to get in and dining before the show is the best way of getting a table and being close to the action.

It’s a quality weekend at Ballarat’s best live entertainment venue as Ross Wilson plays the following night at Suttons. Just to make his loyal followers feel old, Ross has been at it for 45 years and is still punching out albums with his latest being I Come In Peace. Have a listen to Fishing On A Rainy Day if you get the chance. It’s a real ear worm and the guitar sounds and vocals are fabulous. It is $42 to get in which is getting up there, but I am sure it will be a cracker of a night!

July 20 has the AMPED Evening happening again. Ballarat High School students entertain (mainly proud parents). I have been along to one of these nights and it was excellent seeing some of the talent that is destined to entertain us in the years to come.

For something a little bit different, Karova Lounge have Aaron Gocs doing his comedy routine on Thursday July 20. Covering a range of material as he observes what happens in this wacky world of ours, Aaron’s short, quirky stories and anecdotes will have you wetting yourself in no time. It’s only $14 to get in.

Ballaratians are truly spoilt when it comes to coffee and the latest pit-stop I have come across is FIKA Coffee Brewers on Doveton Street. There is normally a queue but it is well worth the wait and they open at 7am, which enables you to get your caffeine injection into your veins before you get too grumpy! Sweet tempting snacks are also available and it’s a cute little place to park yourself and forget about the day. Stay warm folks!
