Baker Boy and Yothu Yindi lead new Tasmanian music and arts festival, Pangaea

Tassie just scored a brand new festival with a focus on music, culture, arts and sustainability.

Guided by a vision and a mission to unite people in celebration and knowledge sharing through music, arts and culture towards a sustainable future for all, Pangaea is the newest event to join the Australian festival circuit, arriving in Tasmania in February next year.

Offering a fresh approach to the traditional festival format, with a strong focus on sustainability, educational and interactive lifestyle and arts workshops along with an array of national and local musical acts on show, the multi-day festival taking place at Stonehurst, in luthmarratikalona (Prosser Plains/Buckland) and is expected to attract up to 1500 attendees to the 200-acre camping bushlands and active farm in the Buckland region.

The key takeaways

  • A new festival is heading to Tasmania in 2022
  • Pangaea is set to be ‘a festive adventure’ over 3 nights and 2.5 days camping in lutruwita/Tasmania’s south-east, on 11-14 February 2022
  • Baker Boy, ARIA Hall of Fame inductees Yothu Yindi and internet sensation and beatboxer Tom Thum lead the lineup

Keep up with the latest music tours and festival news here.

Dubbed a ‘festival adventure’ over three nights, music highlights include rapper Baker Boy, ARIA Hall of Fame inductees Yothu Yindi, internet sensation and beatboxer Tom Thum, Vibrant Matters the alter ego of Hobart Street artist Jamin, the 16 piece Public Opinion Afro Orchestra and more than 30 other music acts ranging folk, pop, alt-country folk, swinging gypsy jazz, carnivalesque, worldly beats and more.

Taking its name from the ‘ancient supercontinent comprised of all the present continents – a single, unified landmass surrounded by a single, unified sea’, the festival aims to foster a sense of community, connectedness, family and support a plethora of cultural activities that are featured throughout the programme.

Alongside the strong music lineup, the festival will also host ‘Tin Camp Sessions’ with a rich focus on storytelling, offering space for various workshops, talks, open mic and jam sessions; a ‘Circus Town’ featuring acrobats and comedians, sideshow legends, bubble blowers, family shows, workshops and rovers, flying trapeze, kids disco, cabarets, stunts and more; as well as an abundance of localised food and produce stalls and suppliers. Local eateries have been selected for their strong focus and contributions to sustainable food systems, who champion regenerative agriculture while lessening food miles and footprints and strengthening nutrition and provenance. Tasmanian artisan and craft stalls that focus on quality, handmade, and locally produced products.

Supported by the Federal Governments RISE program, Festivals Australia and Events Tasmania, Pangaea is the brainchild of Alison McCrindle and Sean Le Rossignol and promises to deliver enormous value to the Tasmaniac community and arts industry especially since the recent cancellation of some of Tasmania’s largest and most iconic events such as Fass Festival and Festivale, and the not so recent ending of the cherished Tasmania Circus Festival.

Pangaea supports over 160 Tasmanian artists and arts workers, and is pivotal in reactivating the Tasmanian community, it’s artists and the broader arts industry. Operating under a sustainability framework and implementing circular economy systems Pangaea aims to reach a zero carbon footprint by 2024.

Pangaea will run from Friday 11th to Monday 14th February 2022. You can view the full program here
