Awkwardstra Geelong is the new, inclusive community orchestra celebrating local classical musicians

With its first rehearsal taking place in September, a diverse collection of emerging talents is set to impress.

Do you play an orchestral instrument? Sort of?

Awkwardstra Geelong is a newly launched community orchestra for any and all musicians, regardless of their experience or skill level.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here.

The brainchild of Scott Popovic, a Geelong-based artist, photographer and comedic actor (The Producers), Awkwardstra Geelong has been created by musicians, for musicians.

With the music industry being a vast and diverse field, comprised of vocalists, instrumentalists, producers and more, of different genders and varying backgrounds, Awkwardstra Geelong aims to embrace that in the classical music realm and provide a wholly inclusive orchestra for any and all musicians, regardless of skill or experience.

“This orchestra is for anyone who just loves to play and wants to be part of a musical group,” the group says.

“We don’t aim to be the MSO, just a fun place to be part of something special.”

While the group will be limited to orchestral instruments (think violin, cello, flute, saxophone, triangle, bass drum), that’s exactly where the limitation end, with levels of musical experience ranging from absolute beginners to those returning after many years of hiatus, or players just looking for performance experience.

Finding a home at Vines Road Community Centre, the orchestra will begin rehearsals on Monday nights, beginning at 7:30pm on September 5th, 2022. No auditions are necessary, just simply rock up on the night. It will be $5 per session.

It all takes place at Vines Road Community Centre, 37-61 Vines Road, Hamlyn Heights. Find out more here
