Australia’s International sensation Mulletfest is coming to Victoria in October

Mulletfest is touring Australia this year, with the annual festival due to stop by Dookie, Victoria in October.

After gaining traction in the late ’70s and peaking in the ’80s, the mullet became one of the most iconic hairstyles of all time. While this short at the front, long at the back haircut has had its fair share of jokes, we’ve seen it slowly making its way back into fashion in recent times.

Suited to those who aren’t afraid to stray from the crowd and don’t take themselves too seriously, there’s now a festival dedicated majestic hairstyles and it’s been touring Australia for the better part of the year.

Hailed as one of Australia’s most hilarious events, Mulletfest announced its return back in January as a touring festival, hitting the road to visit small pubs in Australia that have been struggling to recover from a devastating two years of the pandemic.

The internationally-recognised festival was established back in 2018 by founder Laura Johnson as a tourism injection for the town of Kurri Kurri, which at the time was hard hit by the closure of a large generational employer. Unsurprisingly, the event attracted crowds from all over Australia while attracting news coverage from across the world.

Taking the event on tour has seen the festival host heats all over the country with a grand final to be held in December. This new format allows crowds to remain more localised while still fostering the sense of community the festival is renowned for.

What began as an annual event in Kurri Kurri, Mulletfest On Tour kicked off back in January at Summernats in Canberra and has so far taken to Summernats in Perth, Kurri Kurri in NSW, Albury in NSW, Rockhampton in QLD, and Glenreagh in NSW. Its next stops will be in Dubbo, NSW in August, Gold Coast TBC, Alice Springs in NT in September, Murrurundi in NSW before finishing up at Gladstone Dookie Hotel in Victoria from October 21-23.

The event boasts several categories, including juniors in divisions ranging from ages 0-3, 4-7 8-13 and 14-18. In the adult’s events, contestants can enter in categories including vintage, ranga, rookie, grubby, extreme, everyday and international. All competition entrants are judged on their haircut, overall presentation and stage presence, and the person with the “Best Mullet of them All” is crowned on the day and takes home that worthy honour.

Not only does Mulletfest encourage the celebration of a unique hair style, and the fun-loving atmosphere that goes with it, but the event also supports local charities and those in need.

Join the fun this year and be part of the ever-growing ‘Party in the Back’ that is Mulletfest!
